It’s more like a Greek connection. Pop worked on a deal between Israel and Greek Cyprus for a natural gas terminal. The US connection is that Noble Energy of Houston is in on the deal.

Looks like FBI/CIA tried to frame Pop for taking a bribe from Israelis, making him an ‘unregistered foreign agent’ of Israeli interests. It’s a transparent joke.

Yeah, they were probably trying to set Papadopoulos up for all kinds of criminal charges using the money and his relationship with foreign governments to threaten him with decades of jail time and then coerce him as part of a plea deal into working as a planted agent in the Trump campaign to set up Donald Trump if he could or, failing that, manufacturing a scandal which would take down Donald Trump right before the election and give Hillary Clinton the Presidency

This was a pretty sophisticated and devious operation against President Trump and it smacks of the kind of CIA dirty tricks they used to employ in their regime change operations
