I’m sure they cheated a bit by counting only the sites with large followers. Even still, it’s probably statistically valid.

Google has a “trending” tool that allows a person to search on a word or phrase, and the bubble graphics are an easy output from several data analysis programs.

Completely doable. It doesn’t claim to be an exhaustive search but it does catch enough to chart ... fascinating article if it weren’t for its own rhetoric.
