They naturally come out straight. If not, they dry straight.
Its when they cut across the grain when it likes to warp when it is dried.
First time I saw this, I didnt believe it. And I have been in and around sawmills and the forest products industry all my life.
Our local Ace store is CRAMMED with products floor to ceiling. It’s got a real old-time feel to it. The owner, Henry, knows all his regulars. He hires the best people, too. When his girls were little, they all worked in the store, but they are grown now. His wife used to run the bathroom section, but the eventually shut that down. It’s the best hardware store for miles around. I always shop there and avoid HD whenever possible.
There is a small ACE store about five miles away. Total dump. It’s a combination ACE Hardware, Flea Market, Sanford and Son.
My wife went there once and was so freaked out that she said she’d never go back. I had never been there and went to check it out. What a great place!
42% of the closures in all of the U.S. and 58% of them in much less populous Canada.
Is that saying DIY is less popular in Canada, or that Lowes has more competition in Canada, or that something about Canada makes Lowes less profitable there? I wonder.
After a terrible customer service experience at Lowes, 20 years ago, I told the manager I would never set foot in a Lowes again, even if it meant driving 20 miles to a competitor.
I have gone into one with my brother. He shops there, and I wanted to observe. Just watching him have to deal with the incompetent help and cashiers was enough to get my blood pressure up.
I think one of Lowes’ problems is they don’t train their people on customer service, or do a poor job of it.
My return experience at Lowes drove me away.
I brought a sheet of plywood back and the lady told me to “stand over there” and she’d get to me. I then watched her close out her register, take off her apron and walk away.
I’ve been in a lot of Ace stores and they vary all over the map. The one in our town here in the Bay Area is by far the best I’ve seen with the best people.
I DID read it. $100 billion vs. $70 billion is a multiple of 1.43. That’s good, but Home Depot is not crushing (my word) Lowe’s in sales. Nor is Lowe’s in some sort of “retail apocalypse” (article words) at this point. Relatively, Lowes is a little smaller competitor, and both are healthy overall, with HD doing better. HD stock is certainly better, which is significant.
As I mentioned in another post, if in a couple years, Lowe’s closes, say, 150 stores in the US, THAT would be, in my view, more significant. Do you see some sign of that?
My overall view of Home Depot is good, actually. And they have been one of the best at getting truckloads of generators into areas that have sustained natural disasters. That was a huge help to us, in the 2009 mid-south ice storm. :-)
That all said, Lowes does face some challenges, one of which is the need for a better website. And here in the Midwest, I suspect Menards is stunting their growth a bit.
We have a Menards about an hour away, so we get those ads on radio and TV already. :-)
Since they are only about 20 minutes detour from a route we often travel, I probably get in there once a month, on average.
Some of the rebates are very good, too!
“other rebates”, I should have said. :-)
“incompetent help and cashiers”
Yep, dat’s da one.
And both, as with Walmart, have poor web sites, Lowes being worse, which Amazon (whose liberal leadership is bad) profits from. But with a free MyLowes account you could get free shipping with no minimum on a lot of things.
