Amazon’s missed opportunity: Failing to put part of HQ2 in a red state
The Dallas Morning News ^ | November 15, 2018 | Mitchell Schnurman, Business columnist

Amazon has been an aggressive advocate for diversity. That includes providing strong support for immigrants, minorities, the LGBTQ community, people with disabilities, the military, women engineers and more.

When the company was searching for a second headquarters, it made diversity a key issue. To achieve long-term success, Amazon said last year, the winning city must have a diverse population and a community that supports it.

Does that also mean diversity in politics, geography and even home prices?

Apparently not, because Amazon chose two locales — New York City and Washington — that have a lot in common with its hometown of Seattle. All three are liberal coastal regions with sky-high apartment rents and home prices, and a strong appeal to college-educated millennials.

Call it a missed opportunity, a lost chance to plant a deeper flag in a red state where Amazon might hear some very different ideas. You don’t have to be a dreamer to believe there’s more than one way to be diverse — and to be diversified....

Amazon picked those locations because it will be easier for them to lobby Congress and the U S Presidency.

“Thank God Amazon located where they did. We don’t need their cancer infecting a red state. ”

Agree. I live in the DFW area near one of the areas on the list. We can’t build roads, infrastructure, housing, etc, fast enough for the growth and influx of new businesses and people as it is. I want to say this to our newly arrived “Texans”; welcome to Texas! But, please give some thought as to why you had to leave your previous residence and relocate here when you go vote. Don’t try to make Texas like where you came from. Look at Colorado and Arizona as an example and you will see what I mean! Let’s keep Texas great, ok? God Bless Texas!

Local news here in NJ was pretending Newark was a serious contender; Senator T-Bone Spartacus was touting Newark’s “highly educated workforce” as reason to move here (seriously). The problem is nobody wants to work in Newark (the companies that remain there have a very hard time attracting talent - and none of it is “local”), and the tax breaks they offer simply burden the real taxpayers of the state with more of Newark’s bills. The Queens people upset with having Amazon come in understand that they needed companies which they could suck dry to pay for their public school unions, free lunch programs (that extend over the summer as well), street repairs, etc.; to basically PAY Amazon to come in made no sense to them. The six-figure jobs these HQs allegedly offer won’t be filled by too many locals...

100% right on everything. Long Island City used to be an industrial wasteland. Of course, since no one but the mega rich can afford Manhattan, development and gentrification spread and LI City is just the latest. The old timers that were/are able to stick around will soon be priced out. To go where, since everything is so expensive, no one knows.

Someone commented a few days ago, on a different thread, that Amazon will pay LESS in taxes if they meet certain benchmarks. They didn’t expand, but that seems to me like, if they make a certain amount of money, then they pay less in taxes. On top of all the tax breaks/incentives they’re already getting. Seems to me like someone that is worth $150 billion wouldn’t have to worry much, about much, considering he could probably buy up half of Queens.

But hey, LI City will soon be home to about 25,000 liberal hipsters. Be a great time to open a sh*tty craft micro brewery in the area, and a store that sells skinny jeans and flannel shirts.

So what have they designed, engineered and mass produced?

Many, many items. Do a search on “Amazon Devices.”

I was glad to see them give this area a pass. Samsung and Toyota have brought in enough west coast socialists. Amazon would have overwhelmed us.

New York and NoVa have been lost for a while now anyway.

AWS- Amazon Web Services. When Cisco had a network crash recently, it turned out that they weren’t running in Cisco data centers, they were running on Amazon machines. Amazon controls a LOT of corporate data on their computers.

Four years ago, they were running about a million and a half servers. They’ve got a lot more than that now.

They won’t regret it. They’ll do what every other damn biz that has been bribed has done after the bribes stop coming: they’ll leave.

Too late for that. Their delivery trucks cover the entire nation - even on Sundays.

They are still in the early stages with massive upside for further growth. Jeff Bezos will likely be the world's first trillionaire.

Remember, they are not just about delivering packages. They are now providing infrastructure (cloud computing) for a lot of emerging corporations. Think about what the means. Through Amazon Web Services, a small startup now has access to the same IT resources as a major corporation with near infinite scalability as they grow - and that side of the business is very profitable for Amazon.

Is that a serious question? If so, you really need to research this company a little more. I recommend you start by reading "The Everything Store" by Brad Stone.

I think you are correct. There was a time when Amazon was almost always the lower cost option. Now that is almost never the case. While in many areas they are still cost competitive, now more often than not their prices are higher than what is available directly through other sites.

Right now...J C Pennys is at a all-time low price on stock. What Wal-Mart should do is walk in, buy the the chain (especially with their IT division), and then market the clothing within Wal-Mart.

There’s tons of ways to put heavy competition on Amazon and really force them to cut prices.

The six-figure jobs these HQs allegedly offer won’t be filled by too many locals...

True. It is very difficult to get into Amazon - unless you want to work in a fulfillment center as a laborer. My son graduated a few years ago with an engineering degree and one of his classmates, who was at the top of his class, was recruited and hired by them. Even so, he went through six interviews, flying out to Seattle for the final two. I asked my son to apply and he laughed. He told me you don't "apply" to work at Amazon for an engineering job, Amazon comes looking for you and they only take the very top students around the world. He's probably right.

So if you are a product of the NYC public school system, your chances of working at their new HQ is close to zero unless you want to maybe work in one of their cafeterias or as a janitor.

Don't get me wrong, it's great for the local economy. What will happen is a lot of highly educated people will relocate to Queens, rent expensive lofts and create demand for hundreds of trendy restaurants, coffee shops, brew-pubs and so forth. If you are a young kid in Queens, learn to make a good latte!

the winning city must have a diverse population

To the left "a diverse population" means a white liberal, a black liberal, an Asian liberal, a Muslim liberal, a Jewish liberal, a gay liberal, a lesbian liberal, an illegal alien liberal, and a conservative.

I didn’t want them infecting Indianapolis. We’ve already caught a bad case of Salesforce. Let’s concentrate all the liberals in aa few electoral district as possible.
