Yaw appears to be a foreign concept to Russian drivers as do brakes, and anyone pulling into an intersection at the wrong time deserves immediate punishment, so they ram them. Russian pedestrians are total nihilists, too, they seem to relish the accidents they cause by stepping right out into traffic driving on ice and snow, especially the old ladies. And, if you see an old tank of a LADA piling down the road, get as far away as you can, the tires are crap, the brakes are shit and the driver is far more psychotic than the typical psychotic Russian driver.
That’s my takeaway from Russian dash cam videos.
Plus, they drive too fast for the road conditions. And they act like they’re the only ones using the road. We once had has a bunch of Russian guys living in our building here. Nice guys, but now wouldn’t wanna ride with any... Har!
A few conclusions:
1. Russian drivers are idiots. A significant percentage have no business driving.
a. How does a people who live where it has snow 6 months or more a year not know how to drive on snow and ice? See #1 above.
2. Auto-body repair shops is a most lucrative business.
3. Insurance must cost 2 - 3x what a car costs.
4. Never drive in Russia, and if you must get a ride somewhere, hire a tank.
Oh, one more:
Amazed that so many Russians are driving late-model cars - nice ones. They seem far better off financially than I would have expected........
Well, at the end of this past summer, when I was still living in southern Russia, there was a massive thunder/windstorm, and a tree fell on my car (a VW Touran), crushing the roof. In the US this would have been an obvious total. I was able to purchase a used roof (shipped to me) and have the old one cut off and the new one welded on. The whole thing including paint and a windshield cost maybe 1000 bucks, and the car looks like nothing ever happened.
You would be astounded if you actually saw the real Russia. It’s nothing like the popular image. I just recently got back from living there for almost a year and a half. Nice, imported cars, shopping malls, technology, it’s all there.
Note that there are a lot of places in Russia that get very little snow normally, but occasionally can get a nice dump. Very similar to mid-eastern seaboard USA.
Same here for studs. My truck and spousal units SUV, all four tires. Only way I'd drive down the mountain without chains, which are a PITA to put on and off.
Even with studs there is about three weeks a year I chain up the truck and the spousal units SUV stays parked.
Appears you have your act together.
Good for you, not enough well equipped drivers when the snow flies.
