The New Hampshire Department of Transportation said it's hiring snowplow drivers and guaranteeing 10 hours pay every two weeks.
CONCORD, NH The New Hampshire Department of Transportation last week said it's hiring plow drivers for winter snow removal. Pay rates will be up to $95.10 an hour, which includes the driver and truck and depends on equipment setup. Pay also includes hourly fuel rates.
Ten hours of pay are guaranteed every two weeks through March 15, even if there's no snow, the department said. Interested parties can call 603-419-9017 for more information.
Winter starts Dec. 21. The latest New Hampshire winter forecast calls for warmer-than-usual temperatures, meaning more mixed-precipitation events like Monday's slushy snow/sleet mix.
Damn, that’s even more than I make
If you have to supply the truck and the snowplow, that’s not really a pay rate.
Do they at least provide additional insurance, or do you have to have commercial vehicle insurance?
That’s more than a $200k annualized salary.
Its fun when it is not your money you are spending.
You have to supply the truck, plow & sander unit. So, it is not $95/hour just for the driver.
Yeah but it’s nothing at all like a “salary” — it is being on call potentially 24x7 (or whatever coverage schedule you can work out with them) with your own truck/plow. It’s only getting paid for 5 hrs per week unless it snows enough to give you more work (which is certainly possible some weeks in a NH winter). It only works out well if you have a very flexible life, don’t mind being called out to plow at all hours, etc.
I used to get $5 for a driveway...Only took about 1/2 hr.
You are “guaranteed” 20 hours per month through March 15. Rather hard to annualize that.
Maybe if you have a 30 hour a week job you can squeeze in the extra 5 hours, but I doubt you have a lot of flexibility on your schedule. Or maybe if you are working in the “gig economy” you can head out whenever Nature calls. When God dumps the Global Baloney, out you go into the cold.
Also, plowing beats the SH&T out your equipment. Everyone knows this. Therefore, it lowers the resale/trade in value of your 4WD pick up.
Lastly, you are plowing state roads. Therefore, you need big equipment. Two axle, 10 yard or bigger dump trucks.
They do not contract anybody with an F150 and a Boss plow.
I think I got less than that. Minimum wage when I was a kid was $1.60/hour. I probably got $3 for an average driveway. That was one heck of a workout, too! Didn’t need the gym if you were shoveling snow.
My Grandpa, RIP, dropped dead in his driveway shoveling the snow at age 72.
Have Snowplow - Will Travel.
Text Paladin’s great grandson.
That just went from good money to I can’t afford to take that job heh.
Driveways here in southern NH are now $30-100/6” storm. I pay $40/6” or less for my 150’ paved driveway.
My daughter/son in law have a 450’ driveway. It is $75/plow.
Do you plow only when you get 6” or more and ignore anything less?
Exactly. Just like Uber and Lyft compensation rates aren’t really pay rates.
That's including you supplying your own truck, plow, gas, and probably commercial insurance. After expenses, the net is probably not that good.
That $95 top rate is probably for people who have a real snowplow truck, not just a pickup with a plow attachment.
the taxpayers should sue!
I got a two-stage walk behind snow blower. Can I apply?
