2020 Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro discusses the symbolic meaning of the border wall with CNN's Jake Tapper:
CNN, JAKE TAPPER: Earlier this month, Speaker of the House Pelosi said that the wall was -- quote -- "immoral." As you know, as you just stated, there are roughly 650 miles of existing wall, barrier, fencing at the border. Are they immoral?
JULIAN CASTRO: Well, I don't think it represents the best of what America stands for.
I think -- I believe that if we were to build the kind of wall that Donald Trump is talking about --
(snip)
But I believe, fundamentally, that if we were to build that wall, that it would change the notion of America from the Statue of Liberty that stands for freedom and welcomes immigrants to a country that literally walls itself off from the rest of the world.

Another useful tool (btw, who's running for 2020 Dem nomination) obfuscates legal immigrants on Ellis Island waiting to be processed and those illegals crossing the border.
If my eyes roll any further, I could have seen the back of my head.
Works for me.
Yeh, The World’s Last, Best Place, now with a perimeter...
No kidding - what’s wrong with that?!
Lady Liberty says freedom and justice for all. The Trump Wall says two things - abide by the laws of our land and we will protect our citizens.
What’s the down side?
I wouldn’t have a problem if all immigrants had to go through Ellis Island first...
Another hysteric.
Sounds great, now where is it?
Drama queen.
For Commies keeping the border OPEN so that everyone can come in and vote Democrat is ALL that matters to these people. Have the illegals coming in caravans all wear MAGA hats and see how fast these commies build that wall
Pobrecitos, Hoolian, all your invasion dreams crushed by de beeg bad Trumpie.
You were so looking forward to ruling de gringos with the vote of your angry Ork masses from South of El Rio.
Ellis Island, where the Statue of Liberty stands, was the wall of the time.
Nobody got into America without passing through it, and lots of people were screened and sent back home or kept in quarantine.
fundamentally....you’re a moron
My Grandfather had his twin brother taken on Ellis Island. He had a disease that was not allowed into the country.
The family had to choose between waiting for him to clear, or moving on. They had to choose to move, for the good of the rest of the family.
Now THAT is a cruel choice, but necessary if you are protecting the citizens that are here.
What was that about the Statue of Liberty again????
My grandparents did. Became citizens the legal way. This crap at the border makes a mockery of all the people that went before that went through proper channels.
A wall does not keep people in the country anyone has the liberty to leave.
Please.
caravans all wear MAGA hats and see how fast these commies build that wall
Maybe someone should ship down thousands of MAGA hats and passed them out to the invaders. They may not know what they are and just figure it is nice to get a new hat. /s
He probably thinks the Statue was built to represent the stupid poem written after it was built.
