A Winter Tale of Snow to Remember and Sun Long Ago
The Great Recession Blog ^ | February 3, 2019 | David Haggith

Posted on 02/04/2019 4:16:32 PM PST by CedarDave

I wrote months ago about the coming mini ice age. Recently the reality of this cooling trend became mainstream news because of a new scientific study affirming it, and even more recently, the midwest decided to remind us of what mini ice ages might feel like. The reason for all of this is told here:

The sun is entering one of the deepest Solar Minima of the Space Age. Sunspots have been absent for most of 2018, and the sun’s ultraviolet output has sharply dropped. New research shows that Earth’s upper atmosphere is responding. “We see a cooling trend,” says Martin Mlynczak of NASA’s Langley Research Center. “High above Earth’s surface, near the edge of space, our atmosphere is losing heat energy. If current trends continue, it could soon set a Space Age record for cold…. “The thermosphere always cools off during Solar Minimum.” It’s one of the most important ways the solar cycle affects our planet. As 2018 comes to an end, the Thermosphere Climate Index is on the verge of setting a Space Age record for Cold. “We’re not there quite yet,” says Mlynczak, “but it could happen in a matter of months.”Space Weather Archive

That story was repeated and elaborated upon by The Sun in the UK in an article titled “DEEP FREEZE Long cold winter could hit space in months bringing record low temperatures,” which predicted the events that have just happened in the midwest and the UK:

A long cold winter could hit space in months bringing record low temperatures, NASA has warned. That’s the warning from a scientist who fears sunspot activity on the surface of our star has dropped so low that record low temperatures could soon set in.The Sun

From there, the article proliferated on the Drudge Report and many other news sites. Then, this fact-checker said the story was just more fake news:

This fact-checker got several news outlets to correct a false story about a mini-Ice Age. The story warned of “long cold winter” that could bring record-low temperatures to Earth over the next few months…. Despite appearing in Fox News, two daily newspapers in the United Kingdom and at least 12 local radio shows, the claim is false — and its origin is a classic case of what Emmanuel Vincent likes to think of as media telephone.Poynter

Tell that to the City of Chicago and the upper midwest. Tell it to the UK. The story as it was originally told seems prescient now. It looks now like cooling of the upper atmosphere can create cooling down below. It is, at least, a plausible explanation for the repeated polar vortices in the last few years. It is quite possible that greenhouse gases are trapping in heat at the same time the sun is reducing its radiation and that the sun may be winning that battle for the time being.

Most of us recognized from our own experience that the earth felt like it was getting warmer in the seventies and eighties and nineties, and we could see that glaciers were retreating rapidly. Now many of us feel by our same experience that the earth is actually cooling. We have had a repeated harsh winters of late with each one feeling more severe than the one before.

As I write now, the edge of the polar vortex has made its way to the Pacific Northwest, and snow is blowing sideways across the fields from the north. The wind is howling around the house and knocked the power out so that we were running on generator. That’s not unusual for the mountain region where I live, but for the last three years winters have brought record snowfalls to parts of the Cascades.

So, what is normal? Can the earth be cooling when there are clearly more greenhouse gases now than back in the 1700s? It is cooling because the sun is going into a mini ice age event called a solar minimum in which the sun stops emitting solar flares, which means it stops bathing the earth’s outer atmosphere in as much ejected radiation (and the heat that goes along with that).

The last time the sun settled into one of these reduced-activity cycles was back in the late 1600s and 1700s. Benjamin Franklin was visiting France in those days, and the United States of America did not exist. That the earth was cooler in those decades of reduced solar flares is born out by numerous writings that talked about how the Thames would freeze over and other great winter-storm events. It is also recorded in trapped atmosphere in which trace particles indicate a cooler climate at that time.

Much more to the article. Though not required to be excerpted, I did cut the article as it is quite lengthy.

Computer models and "settled science" say no. Your lyin' eyes say yes.

We watch solar science videos on YouTube. Where a published paper is the source. The sun drives climate, more than trace gas in the atmosphere. We are in for 1970s cold at a minimum, likely a mini-ice age cold, and possibly the start of a full ice age. Bear in mind the magnetic pole and strength is shifting at the same time, which did not happen in the 1970s. This changes the ionosphere, and forces on the earth crust which can lead to volcanic activity, accelerating the temperature decline.

The sun is the source of virtually all of the warmth on the planet. Without the sun, the surface temperature of the earth would be about -270 deg C (-454 deg F). Greenhouse gases are an insignificant component when compared to the solar output component of global temperature.

I have been discussing the coming mini ice age with my husband and ranting about how the moronic “scientists” and politicians should be looking at ways to produce food with very little sun. They should not be telling tall tales about global warming. We are going to come up against a catastrophic event.

The following NOAA graph shows TWO stories:

The ADJUSTED temperatures show that for over 100 years, the RED line shows a clear, steady increase which is consistent with rising levels of CO2 in the atmosphere.

The MEASURED temperatures (BLUE LINE) shows that temperatures are cyclical and that the 1930's were hotter than recent years. MEASURED temperatures do not show a strong correlation with atmospheric CO2 concentrations.

It can also be seen from this graph that the newsmedia and the "climate scientists" are talking about ADJUSTED temperature changes, NOT actual measured temperature changes. Saying it another way, anybody who believes that Earth is headed for doomsday warming based on NOAA/climate scientist predictions is an idiot.

Looking at the Ice Age Farmer site, you would do well to start looking for property in SoAz or South Texas.

EARTH TO COOL DOWN WARNS GEO SCIENTIST
published 6/20/2007

Scientific reports from Canada and Greenland has indicated that the the shrinking arctic ice sheets have begun to replace themselves rapidly. Strongly suggesting the earth instead of warming, is beginning to cool down. It is still not known (or proven) if this is the result because of the reduced rate of sun spot activity.

Canadian geo scientist Professor R. Timothy Patterson of Carelton University is urging a go-slow on the rush for governments to “Play God” with global warming legislative blaming this on CO2 (carbon dioxide) discharges. Legislating corrections attempting to control a natural cyclic occurrence caused by; sun spots, the magnetic solar wind, and cyclic earth magnetic polarity reversal, among other natural occurrences including volcanism, meteors etc. Probably plays a very significant role in climate change. Yet ignorantly blaming man made CO2 emissions for climatic change. which is becoming a rapidly discredited and minuscule cause of global warming in his article published by Canada’s Financial Post. 6/20/07

Patterson was selected by the Canadian government to study the fluctuations in certain types of fish populations.
While doing so the Canadian Geo-Scientist found a correlation when certain species of fish had high population and then drastic drop offs. He discovered these fluctuations corresponded with sun spot activity and solar radiation vs cosmic activity. When earth cooling occurred.

Studying deep fjords along the Western Canadian coast where deep pools of low oxidation water exist. The Patterson study reached deep into the earths recent past of 4000 years of undisturbed sediments. Patterson found that when aquatic activity was highest and lowest in those collected sediments having high aquatic content had matched known solar protection when the magnetic wind was highest, and dropped off when earth magnetic fields activities were lowest. Thus causing cosmic radiation to intensify.

Then because the earth became unprotected by its magnetic fields from galactic cosmic activity. Patterson cites several accepted theories which concludes this then created cloud activity during such periods which increased drastically. Thus cooling earth and bringing in its ice ages.

In his presentation here is a professor urging more scientific study (like Pope Benedict)is needed. That politicians including Al Gore, of The Earth Is Flat Society, don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. Strongly suggesting that the global warming may be caused by exhaling politicos rather than serious scientific examination.

Patterson seems to be saying before Canadians start investing in palm trees they should be considering better parkas because what goes up must come down and the Mexicans better move over for a reverse population flow. The story was featured in The Drudge Report, and World Net Daily, which were linked in The US Mat’s last page. But lost due to source link changes . http://www.theusmat.com/index.htm

I am a bit of a skeptic myself but two things,

(a) the UK is not having a particularly cold winter, it was just cold last week in Scotland.

(b) the adjusted temperature series has some validity, there used to be a different practice in place about incorporating colder evening temperatures into the daily reporting (relevant mostly to winter months when it can sometimes turn a lot colder after a cold front in the daytime). This is why the temperature series look different, not because any attempt was made to hide the hot summers of the 1930s. Those still rank near the top and daily records from July 1936 in particular still top the lists for many places.

That does not excuse the theory more generally, but those are facts that should be considered. I’m fairly old so I do remember specific temperatures from the pre-AGW era and my opinion is that daytime temperatures have not changed while night temperatures have warmed slightly in recent times.

As to an impending ice age, I don’t see that happening, the Milankovitch factors would prevent anything much colder than the Little Ice Age (which was not an ice age in the sense of huge continental glaciers and frozen oceans). The magnetic field’s contribution is largely unknown, I suspect it may be a factor, but anything said about that is entirely conjectural.

This winter has seen some brutal cold mainly because the arctic had a colder than normal summer. Resolute in the central Canadian arctic stayed 2 to 4 degrees below average in July and August, never really had a break from one late winter into another early one, and Hudson Bay then froze over a month earlier than usual in late November. Those factors have allowed severe cold to make an easier journey south and the circulation has allowed that frequently in the past few weeks. Even so, this has not been a particularly cold winter, before the cold spell it had been running several degrees above normal.

You're probably availing yourself of much of the same information as my wife and I. We began being exposed to the data about the approaching grand solar minimum about a year ago, and have been paying close attention ever since.

We think the underlying science is solid and irrefutable. The sun and the planets are subject to a recurring, cyclical pattern of cooling and heating, that can be read in the earth's geologic record, going back tens of thousands of years. Comparing our climate records from the last few centuries to the geologic climate record reveals where our planet currently is on the long term, cyclical climate pattern.

Reviewing the evidence, there's no question that we've already entered a new era of cold, which is why we've been stockpiling food stores since last summer. We've stocked enough to feed our family of five for a year, at this point, and will try to put back enough for two years.

We're also starting a vegetable garden out back, and may even plow up the whole back yard to plant crops.

Get ready, everyone. It's coming.

Every time they come out with a story like this so many people jumps right on it, it proves the prior theory wrong, people falls for it every time.
