They're also doing him a big favor by not releasing his name. If they do he will be subject to weeks of death threats and harassment from the peace, love and brown rice tree hugger types.
That's what happened to a guy who shot a mountain lion here that had been stalking his children where they waited for the school bus. That was a decade or so ago. The state had no problem with him but the oh-so tolerant eco-wacko libtards wanted him dead for protecting his kids. That seems to be a theme with liberals.

Quick thinking, glad he survived. Personally I don't go trail off trail walking unarmed, much less running, aka trail trolling. Sometimes you get a bite. Fortunate it was a juvenile both for smaller size, and the fact that he might not have had time to respond to typical stealthy attack by an adult.
This reminds me of clean comedian Brian Regan’s routine about the “me monster” dealing with braggarts in social situations who tout their successes and accomplishments. “Checking out my overseas property and driving my Mercedes on the autobahn!” He wondered what would happen if one of the astronauts who had walked on the moon happened to be there and had an opportunity to mention, “Well... I walked on the moon.”
I’m thinking “I killed a mountain lion with my bare hands.” would also work well in that situation.
Maybe some PETA folks would argue that he stalked, then pounced on the Cat and strangled it thus committing murder.
I read in another article somewhere that the cougar was a juvenile.
