HANOI - Communist-run but with capitalist leanings, and a friend to both the United States and North Korea, Vietnam will host the next summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jung Un from February 27 to 28.
Like North Korea, Vietnam was once locked in a bloody and bitter war with the US.
But unlike Pyongyang, Hanoi now counts Washington among its closest allies, emerging from the ravages of war to become one of the fastest growing economies in Asia -- and one of the most diplomatically savvy.
Here are a few reasons why it was chosen to host the second Trump-Kim summit:
Does it make logistical sense?
Vietnam ticks a lot of boxes. It is a short enough flight from Pyongyang for Kim, who otherwise travels by armored train....

Vietnam has a GDP now 15 times greater than NKorea.
This is another sales pitch. If you cooperate you can have a vibrate economy like this.
Nothing is forgotten...
First he colludes with the Russian Commies... Now he colludes with the Vietnamese Commies... Impeach!!! /s

You are exactly right. We can hope Fat Boy sees it.
Great move on Trump’s part. “Look around. You can fight a war with America, call yourself a Communist, and still have a vibrant small ‘c’ capitalist economy.
The Rocket Man would have to borrow a plane from the Chinese just to get anywhere further than Vietnam. North Korea does not have any viable airplanes that can make a long distance trip.
Russia hasn’t been communist since 1990.
It’s nice this time of year?..................
And you can get good Pho...................
North Korea is under the thumb of Communist China. Vietnam wants very much not to come under the thumb of Communist China, even though they are in close proximity.
Ethnic Chinese despise the various nationalities that compromise what was once known as Indo-China, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Burma. They have resisted the political and military pressure from China for years.
in one word: “China” - and it’s a brilliant move.
China’s goal, almost accomplished, is to control all of SE Asia, from seaport to shining seaport, by extending crippling loans that can never be repaid. Trump’s choice of location emphasizes clearly that the US still has influence in the region. At the same time, putting China in the hotseat for the continued pressure needed for peaceful progress of NKorea into the 21st century.
Mark Simone on WOR radio in New York suggested the why is that Trump is certain the only place on the planet that he won’t run into Senator Richard Blumenthal (D) from Connecticut is Vietnam.
Decent journalism hereinteresting subject matter, unbiased, quoted sources. I felt like I was actually reading something real without opinions being tossed in.
Back in my frogman days, all of my mentors were VN era men with green faces. Not one of them hated the VNs. They all had a lot of respect for the allied fighters who worked with them, the “Kit Carson Scouts” and other Chiu Hois. And the PRUs, who were mostly ethnic Chinese Viets.
They had plenty of respect for the enemy as fighters. Plenty. No hatred of them at all, man to man. (Communism, and what communists did, they hated plenty.) But the Viets themselves, not a bit. (No comparison to how our more recent A-stan and Iraq vets feel.)
I also knew a former POW who had done years in the Hanoi Hilton. He said he had guards who (against orders) loosened his bindings and chains after torture sessions. Some even prayed with him (Catholics I suppose) in whispers while doing so. When it would have been their ass if they had been caught.
Communism has effed up a lot of countries. Cuba, Venezuela, Vietnam etc. All of my mentors who served in VN liked the Viets a lot as people.
Trump is smart to visit, IMHO.
Uhhhh ..it’s a country that did just fine when we left and the two parts united.
Even the Chinese got their nose bloodied and their eyes blackened when they tried to attack VN.
There is no love between them. Great move by Trump.
Agree 100%. Great strategic move by Trump. Probably Pompeo’s influence.
Yes. I was there just three weeks ago. Partly cloudy with highs in the upper 70s.
No big mystery. Kim isn’t going to stray too far from home, he doesn’t trust anybody.
