The .22 mag in a 23 inch barrel (Marlin model 25) is just about ideal for large coons. A LR will do the job but the Marlin absolutely nails them.
You are correct about the noise too. Even out of that long barrel it still roars.
I have a buddy that owns a few farms. He had a couple dozen problem raccoons tearing up his place and did the old fly bait and coca cola in a pie pan routine and killed 18 in one night. Too many dogs in my neighborhood for me to try it.
