Ukraine's 'Revolution of Dignity' Has Beeen Anything But

Five years ago, when Ukrainian protestors gathered in Maidan Square, hoping for a better future in the family of European nations and enthusiastically cheered by the Western establishment, nobody could predict the consequences of the “Revolution of Dignity,” as Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has since called it. What started as peaceful protests very quickly transformed into violent riots that led to the overthrow of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych’s regime in 2014.

In the West, Russian aggression towards Ukraine is widely believed to be the primary catalyst that created the Ukrainian crisis, bringing disarray and economic collapse to the largest European country. There is no doubt that Russia plays a role in the post-Euromaidan events in Ukraine, but Russia cannot be exclusively blamed for the current situation within Ukraine.

“Revolution of Dignity” sounds much nicer than coup.

The Ukrainian people will simply follow their only path to order.

They will invite the Russians back.

I read through 100 plus comments on the linked article and no mention of Holodomor. Ukrainians no more forget the Holodomor, than Jews forget the Holocaust. Similar loss of life. It plays a critical part in the mind-set of Ukrainians.

Maybe because it is irrelevant in his day and age.

It may well be. To some. Just as the Holocaust is irrelevant. To some.

Apples and oranges. Although Ukraine was a major place for Holocaust and Ukrainian nationalists were eager participants.

Two paths were evident -- one in pursuit of European integration, the other aimed to preserve close relations with Russia. In the past, these were carefully combined.

Nonsense, Ukraine had a choice to either join the EU as a trading partner or the pathetic Russian led Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

How has it worked? Ukraine produced its last airplane in 2014 and last car in 2016. It evidently did better in CIS.

Trading with Europe has a bright future, while making planes, cars or industrial goods just for the Russian market is a dead end.

All of the above and more are products with high added value. Making such for whatever market produces wealth and makes an advanced contry. It makes jobs for smart educated people.
What Ukraine is for EU? A farmland at best which is not promising. Although I wouldn’t count even on it much. France has its farmers too and they have better connections at Brussels. They don’t want any more competition but they sure want to expand their market.

Bottomline is pre-coup Ukraine while not ideal is now a golden standard for them in terms of living conditions and they won’t have it back in generations and that given perfect conditions meaning abandonment of EU delusions.
