Many FReepers have knowledge to share about improving and maintaining health and would like to share it and learn from others; and others may not know much yet but want to learn. Some of us don't have much money for good insurance or doctors, some want to try other methods besides prescription meds, and some have experience in treating and solving health problems.

More and more "regular" doctors have accepted treatment methods such as the benefits of acupuncture, massage for many conditions, better diet, use of herbs and so on. There are limits, and often side effects, to some standard medical efforts.

My field is Ayurvedic herbalism and related measures, and have a lot of information I can post when I have time. I have seen herbs and sometimes dietary changes help people (including myself) with issues such as rheumatoid arthritis, high BP, gallstones, kidneystones, repeated boils, UTIs, prostate problems, insomnia, allergies, urinary incontinence, and many more. I hope to learn a lot from others with their knowledge and experience.

There are many "old fashioned" home care methods that were in common use a few generations ago that actually work and are cheap, such as castor oil packs, fomentations using alternating hot and cold water, and the like, which are easy to do. I am sure there is a lot of knowledge here on Free Republic that can be shared.

I would like this thread to stay civil without distruption, so my request is that people who think natural health methods are bunkum, make your own thread.

I’ll get back to the thread today about respiratory issues. Just so happens the bad cold I had for a week that I thought I kicked, came back and is now kicking me in the lungs!

Do you do colloidal silver? Seems to do anything. Hope you get better soon. And how about huge doses of Vit C ...

What I was going to say is, I soak produce in peroxide, sometimes adding soap, but no more. Probably should add vinegar, if it mixes with the peroxide.

I *used* to use a bar of Ivory hand soap for things with solid outsides like toms, avocado, apple etc

hmm but the article referring to organic soap makes me think there must be such a thing. Maybe later will try a search on that ...

Feedback report on your Borax/Arthritis article. Two weeks ago today I started this regimen, and I am AMAZED at what has occured in these two short weeks. Two weeks ago I was having hot flashes that would literally soak me from head to toe. My jeans would be sticking to my legs! Annoying does not begin to describe it. Now, they have almost completely disappeared. I am NOT exaggerating. They’re still there, but the duration and intensity have been significantly reduced. I no longer have to keep a fan handy (or manila folder at work, or whatever is handy to fan yourself with). Plus, my hands feel GREAT. My main reason in taking this was to combat the arthritis creeping into my hands. They feel much more limber, no more pain in my most arthritic joints, etc. The swelling of these joints has not reduced, but at least they aren’t painful anymore. I wish I’d known about this when my Mom was alive, it could have helped her tremendously. I am also taking the DE, and so far, no side effects that I’ve noticed, and apparently I don’t have any parasites in my system (at least none that were noticeable like in some of the stories that I read). I didn’t tell my husband for over a week cause I knew he’d think I was crazy. But, once the hot flashes subsided so significantly, I told him what I was doing, and the story behind it. He was amazed and said keep it up! He’s seen me go through so many hot flashes he’s grateful for anything that helps me, and knows I refuse to take any pharmaceuticals. About six months ago, we were driving home from the airport and I had a hot flash that just drenched me. He looked at me and said ‘Life is NOT FAIR to women!’ I love him for that! HAHA!

Oil of Evening Primrose (in capsule) also works very well. Suggested it to a friend and she never had hot flashes.

Need any help I can get, have fluid in both ears, hearing is affected. No dizziness, just frustration.
Had sinus infection, it seemed to settle in one ear and now it is going back and forth between both ears.

I have been absent from this thread for too long! (actually DH was sick, then I was, then he was, then I was.... that took time).

I remember someone had this problem in the beginning of the thread - was it you? Because if it was you, then the problem has been ongoing for some time. It has to be in your inner ear or the fluid could come out by putting your head to the side and sometimes shaking it.

I had a sinus infection from Hell years ago on one side, and also ear infection, and my eardrum broke. Had blood and pus pouring from nostril and ear. Hearing has never been the same since. So take care. I do not know how to get the fluid out of the inner ear.

I had another thought. Swimmers sometimes get water in their ears that they can’t get out, and there are products to (supposedly) cure this; I never tried them so I don’t know if they work or not. But it would seem that if swimmers/surfers can’t get the water out the normal methods, it must have gotten into the inner ear.

I searched and couldn’t find anything as described above, but did find this, may have useful info:

13 Ways to Get Water Out of Your Ear

https://www.healthline.com/health/how-to-get-water-out-of-your-ear

Although swimming is often the cause, you can get water trapped in your ear canal from any exposure to water. If this happens, you may feel a tickling sensation in your ear. This feeling may extend to your jawbone or throat. You may also not be able to hear as well or only hear muffled sounds.

Usually, the water drains out on its own. If it doesn’t, the trapped water may lead to an ear infection. This type of ear infection in the external auditory canal of your outer ear is called swimmer’s ear.

It’s not hard to get water out of your ear on your own. These 13 tips can help.

How to remove water from your ear

If water does get trapped in your ear, you can try several at-home remedies for relief:

1. Jiggle your earlobe
This first method may shake the water out of your ear right away.

Gently tug or jiggle your earlobe while tilting your head in a downward motion toward your shoulder.

You can also try shaking your head from side to side while in this position.

2. Make gravity do the work

With this technique, gravity should help the water drain from your ear.

Lie on your side for a few minutes, with your head on a towel to absorb the water. The water may slowly drain out of your ear.

3. Create a vacuum

This method will create a vacuum that may draw the water out.

Tilt your head sideways, and rest your ear onto your cupped palm, creating a tight seal.

Gently push your hand back and forth toward your ear in a rapid motion, flattening it as you push and cupping it as you pull away.
Tilt your head down to allow the water to drain.

4. Apply a hot compress

Water can sometimes get trapped in your eustachian tubes (which connect your middle ear to the area just behind your nasal passages). This technique can help release the water.

Using hot but not scalding water, wet a washcloth. Make sure to wring out the washcloth before you use it so that it doesn’t drip.

Tilt your head downward on the affected side and apply the cloth to the outside of your ear. Leave it on your ear for about 30 seconds, and then remove it for a minute.

Repeat these steps four or five times. It may help to sit up or lie down on the side opposite of the affected side of your body afterward.

5. Use a blow dryer
The heat from the dryer can help evaporate the water inside your ear canal.

Set your blow dryer to its lowest setting.

Hold the hair dryer about a foot away from your ear and move it in a back-and-forth motion.

While tugging down on your earlobe, let the warm air blow into your ear.

6. Try alcohol and vinegar eardrops

The alcohol [I WOULD USE GRAIN ALCOHOL AS RUBBING ALCOHOL IS POISONOUS] can help evaporate the water in your ear. Alcohol also works to eliminate the growth of bacteria, which can help prevent infection. If the trapped water occurs due to earwax buildup, the vinegar may help remove it.

Combine equal parts alcohol and vinegar to make eardrops.
Using a sterile dropper, apply three or four drops of this mixture into your ear.

Gently rub the outside of your ear.

Wait 30 seconds, and tilt your head sideways to let the solution drain out.

Don’t use this method if you have any of these conditions:

an outer ear infection
a perforated eardrum
tympanostomy tubes (eardrum tubes)

7. Use hydrogen peroxide eardrops

Hydrogen peroxide can help clear debris, earwax, bacteria, or trapped water from your ear.

Using a clean dropper, place three to four drops of hydrogen peroxide into your ear.

Wait two to three minutes.

Tilt the affected side downward, allowing the fluid to drain out.

Don’t use this method if you think you have any of these conditions:

an outer ear infection
a perforated eardrum
tympanostomy tubes (eardrum tubes)
Shop for hydrogen peroxide.

8. Try olive oil

Olive oil can also help prevent infection in your ear, as well as repel water out.

Warm some olive oil in a small bowl.

Using a clean dropper, place a few drops of the oil into the affected ear.
Lie on your other side for about 10 minutes, and then sit up and tilt the ear downward. The water and oil should drain out.

9. Yawn or chew

When water gets stuck in your eustachian tubes, moving your mouth can sometimes help to open the tubes.

Yawn or chew gum to relieve tension in your eustachian tubes.

Tilt your head to release any water from your ear.

10. Perform the Valsalva maneuver

This method can also help open closed eustachian tubes. Be careful not to blow too hard. This can damage your ear drum.

Close your mouth and gently squeeze your nostrils shut with your fingers.

Breathe deeply, and slowly blow the air out of your nose. If you hear a popping sound, it means the eustachian tubes have opened.

Tilt your head to allow the water to drain from your ear.

11. Use steam

Warm steam can help release water from your middle ear through your eustachian tubes. Try taking a hot shower, or giving yourself a mini sauna with a bowl of hot water.

Fill a large bowl with hot steaming water.
Cover your head with a towel to keep the steam in, and hold your face over the bowl.

Inhale the steam for 5 or 10 minutes, and then tilt your head to the side to drain your ear.

12. Try more water

This technique may sound illogical, but it can actually help draw water out of your ear.

Lying on your side, fill the affected ear with water using a clean dropper.

Wait five seconds and then turn over, with the affected ear facing down. All of the water should drain out.

13. Take over-the-counter medication

A number of over-the-counter eardrops are also available. Most are alcohol-based and can help reduce moisture in your outer ear canal, as well as kill bacteria or remove earwax and debris. If you have middle ear congestion, depending on the cause, over-the-counter decongestant or antihistamine therapy may help. Follow the instructions on the packaging.

Another great health product I just discovered is the Navage. The neti pot doesn’t come close to the Navage. I have never been able to breathe through my nose. Breathing through my mouth would cause me to wake several times during the night.

Since I started using the Navage I breathe though my nose and expel air through my mouth, like our bodies are designed to work. It is great to breath correctly.

Could you post a link to that? I have a friend with son who cannot do Neti and has nose breathing problems with allergies.

I plan to write up in depth, using a few different herb books, info about many herbs. Just been sick lately and nothing seems to do any good. Not laying down sick but dragging around like something horrid the cat brought home.

I have a friend who uses it. It is much more expensive than buying a Neti, and extra for the salt pods. It works fine for her though, just make sure to use filtered water.

Another point, lj, I love Pippali. I put a dash on everything, soups, vegetables, salmon, etc. It adds a very pleasant hot flavor.

I add Pippali to all hot drinks and I drink many every day except when the weather is hot. It is very supportive for lung function in particular and has other benefits too.

Thanks for info about the Navage. I’ll stick with my neti pot as it seems to do what it’s meant to do, but this is useful info for people with more serious breathing type problems, or who can’t do Neti.

Here is some info on herbs etc that are considered to help with blood sugar issues. I don’t personally have experience with this either myself or any clients, but I know BS can be a problem over 40 in many people. In fact, while I was looking info up the last couple of days, I found out that 90% of diabetes in the US (according to what I read, anyway) is Type 2.

Herbs traditionally used to help reduce or control blood sugar, I am not writing many details about each herb but do plan on writing up many herb uses extensively.

Black and green tea - contain antioxidants catechin and epicatechin that are supposed to help with BS

Gurmar - other names Gymena, Shardunika - traditionally used in Asia for diabetes, both Type 1 and 2, also helps lower cholesterol and triglycerides, said to restore pancreatic funtion.

Taking Gurmar with shilajit is used by modern Ayurvedic practicioners for diabetes therpay

Fenugreek seeds - use in foods, as a tea and herb

Bitter melon - eaten in Asia a lot, ultra bitter. Found as a dried herb or vegetable, definitely acquired taste, supposed to be very helpful for BS

Neem leaves - also very bitter, many uses (wide spectrum anti-microbial), stimuates insulin secretion. I recommend tablets or capsules, tastes ultra horrible

Guggul (also spelled Guggulu) - for BS and many other uses, including lowering chol./Triglycerides

Amalaki - very widely used for a great many benefits, highest natural source of Vit C even if dried or cooked, I could type out pages on it (and plan to), also helpful with BS.

Shilajit - a mineral pitch from specific rocks in the Himalyas - especially good for kidneys, reproductive system, urinary problems, diabetes and a rejuventive. Tastes horrible, recommend tablets or capsules.

Spices and foods considered healthful and useful for BS issues. Spices can be used in foods, in teas or in capsules, I really could not give clues about doses, I’d say just try to take however one can, and experiment, some like turmeric and ginger can be taken in good amounts:

Cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, nutmeg, bay leaf, cayenne, ginger (powdered), coriander seed

Foods - more legumes are considered good for BS issues, dandelion greens, okra, cabbage, papaya, turnip, cranberry, jerusalem artichoke, millet, oats, barley, buckwheat, onions, garlic.

For those of you that have neck problems with herniated discs I found this video on youtube a few nights ago and it really works. I need neck surgery but just can't do it now. With three hip surgeries in ten months the recovery would be too difficult.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0w9BIJIox08

It's easy to do, you don't need to buy anything and you can do it almost anywhere.
