Many FReepers have knowledge to share about improving and maintaining health and would like to share it and learn from others; and others may not know much yet but want to learn. Some of us don't have much money for good insurance or doctors, some want to try other methods besides prescription meds, and some have experience in treating and solving health problems.

More and more "regular" doctors have accepted treatment methods such as the benefits of acupuncture, massage for many conditions, better diet, use of herbs and so on. There are limits, and often side effects, to some standard medical efforts.

My field is Ayurvedic herbalism and related measures, and have a lot of information I can post when I have time. I have seen herbs and sometimes dietary changes help people (including myself) with issues such as rheumatoid arthritis, high BP, gallstones, kidneystones, repeated boils, UTIs, prostate problems, insomnia, allergies, urinary incontinence, and many more. I hope to learn a lot from others with their knowledge and experience.

There are many "old fashioned" home care methods that were in common use a few generations ago that actually work and are cheap, such as castor oil packs, fomentations using alternating hot and cold water, and the like, which are easy to do. I am sure there is a lot of knowledge here on Free Republic that can be shared.

I would like this thread to stay civil without distruption, so my request is that people who think natural health methods are bunkum, make your own thread.

I finally foudn the ping list for this thread. If anyone wants off/on, freepmail me.

Just letting the list know I am finally starting to post about individual herbs, will be doing one a day if possible, or more. If anyone wants to know more about any herbs I mention, just ask as I might know more. I am more familiar with Ayurvedic herb usage but do know a bit about western herbs and use quite a few of them as well.

Aha, right up my alley. I’ve had borderline low thyroid, elevated TSH numbers for years, uper 4s. I will tell my story later on. But this is what has helped me for years, and my numbers and symptoms got much, much better. Just recently numbers dropped down to mid 2’s!! It’s a traditional Ayurvedic formula Kanchanar Guggulu. Guggulu is a resin similar but not exactly the same as myrrh, it is treated somehow and then mixed with various other herbs into quite a few Guggulu based formulas. They are quite potent and DH and I have used several of them.

I buy the bulk powder as it is cheaper than the tablets; when I first realized my thyroid was not working well all I could find was the tablets, I took about 6 a day, and within one week my low thyroid symptoms got better. I’ll tell more details later, have to cook right now. I will post my favorite source (I have another one that I also like and will find later), and some info about it below.

https://www.amazon.com/Banyan-Botanicals-Kanchanar-Guggulu-Energizing/dp/B0058AAHQO

I am only posting link for this info because for some reason I can’t copy the text:

More info here:

Kanchanar Guggulu: This Ayurvedic Formulation Treats Hormonal Imbalance

Kanchanar Guggulu is an effective Ayurvedic remedy for treating hypothyroidism, hormonal imbalance, PCOS and joint pains. The word Guggul originated from the Sanskrit word Guggulu means ‘protection from the disease’. It also promotes the functioning of the lymphatic system and in getting rid of toxins.

Key Ingredients

Kanchanar Guggulu comprises Kanchanar (bauhinia variegate) bark, ginger, black pepper, long pepper, Haritaki, bibhitaki, amlaki (the combination of triphala), Varuna (crataeva nurvala bark), cardamom, cinnamon, and Guggulu resin in equal amounts.

Kanchanar bark is brewed into a decoction and gets mixed with guggulu and other items to make it into a tablet.

Healing Benefits Of Kanchanar Guggulu
Detoxifies The system
Kanchanar Guggulu is potent in clearing out the toxins from the tissues and other channels in the system allowing the body to revitalize and nourish on its own. It also improvises the gut function enhancing better digestion and absorption of the food.

Purifies The Blood
Guggulu is an important ingredient in kanchanar. It is made from the gum resin of the plant guggulu tree. The host of plant steroids in Guggulu lowers cholesterol level, purify the blood and improve the blood flow.

Weight Loss
Kanchanar guggulu is effective in balancing the Kapha. The bitter, astringent and pungent taste of guggulu helps in burning belly fat and from other areas the body and also enhance the process of digestion. Furthermore, this ayurvedic medicine boosts metabolism and helps in losing weight.

Thyroid Health
Kanchanar guggulu is an amazing ayurvedic formulation that helps in maintaining the secretion of thyroid hormones. It also regulates the functioning of the thyroid gland and improves the conditions. In addition, it enhances the glandular functioning to reduce the swelling caused due to goitre.

Treats PCOS
Polycystic ovarian syndrome is very common among women these days, which is caused due to hormonal imbalance leading to irregular menstrual cycle. This ayurvedic wonder is powerful in stimulating the hormonal balance and in regulating the menstrual cycle.

(End of copy/paste)

We use another guggul formula for arthritis and joint pain, I have not noticed pain reduction with Kanchanar guggulu but may be it helps, I take it for low thyroid solely. Other things that are said to help are kelp and bladderwrack seaweed. I have them powdered but have a hard time ingesting enough to do any good, I should try, since I have them. I am not fond of the taste in food but should force myself.

Here’s info from Banyan Botanicals, one of the good sources for it. I sent an Amazon link and don’t know if it has much info on it. It is said to cleanse the lympathic system and since I was diagnosed with breast cancer, had surgery in June (lumpectomy and 2 sentinal nodes removed), it should be helpful for the lymph nodes since the 2 removed had cancer in them. So, I just keep taking it every day, 1/4 t. 2X a day.

Thank you so much!

I’m going to try it soon. I added it to my Amazon wish list.

I’m just doing selenium and certain vitamins that are supposed to help in order to help my thyroid meds work better.

I ran out of good Naturethroid last month and I’m stuck with NP thyroid which went way downhill in effectiveness.

So now getting cold again when it’s 80 degrees outside and losing motivation and getting all mopey. I normally can’t stay still if my back isn’t bothering me.

Thanks again.

(I can’t take synthetic it doesn’t work for me)

Docs wanted me to take thyroid meds but I wanted to try natural method. The non-synthetic meds are from animals and I’m a vegetarian so I didn’t want to go that route, then I found that they also can cause arrhythmia, and that has been a problem on and off so another reason I couldn’t take them. My sister has Graves so had to have her thyroid zapped and is on meds, don’t know which kind.

Everyone is different.

I’m all for natural methods and diet if it works. I wish I didn’t have to take meds but without them I have no quality of life at all.

I’m on a gluten free diet per my endocrinologist.

I need to lower my carbs next or really cut back on the rice and legumes. I’m finally not gaining weight, but it sure would be nice to be able to lose again.

I was all set to take synthroid, but then the most recent blood test had such a good number I don’t need to. WHatever works, and each person is unique. Maybe if you added Kanchanar guggulu, it might give a bit more oomph in the thyroid and associated functions.

I also have so many allergies/reactions to drugs and other things, (had anaphylactic shock, thankfully in a hospital setting) that I always try natural if possible. I did take Tamoxifen after the surgery but in 4 weeks had such horrible side effects (hardly anyone gets any!) I had to stop.

Interesting. I just bought some collagen powder, though I have only been taking it at breakfast. I’ll try it more often throughout the day.

Yay! Looking forward to your posts. If I can use herbal supplementation rather than a pharmaceutical, I’ll do it every time. Last week I learned about corn silk tea, and am going to start including it in my daily routine. Do you have any thoughts on that?

Corn silk is a very useful diuretic and so helps keep the kidneys and urinary system in good working order. If a person has a tendency towards UTIs and/or water retention, it is totally safe to drink the tea daily. If a person has a tendency towards dryness such as dry skin, dry innards, etc then it should be drunk only as needed. I have some that in my cupboard that I drink occasionally, as I have a tendency towards water retention and sometimes get UTIs. Maybe I’ll make some today. And it has the added advantage that it tastes good.

Another good thing to help prevent UTIs is D-Mannose, it’s the kind of sugar that is in cranberries that takes out bactera in the urinary system, so helps reduce the incidence of UTIs. I take that if I feel some disturbance in the system. I buy it in bulk at Amazon, way cheaper than taking any other way, and it tastes good too, I just take 1 t. in a small cup of warm water to dissolve it. Yummy in fact. Why bother with caps or tablets that have extra ingredients and higher price? I keep in a glass jar with tight lid to keep out moisture. I’ve had a jar for 2 years, perfectly good still.

If UTIs are a problem, or other urinary problems, I know some other things that help too. I have a friend who suffers from occaisonal but frequent urinary incontinence, and she is only in her 20s, and no apparant organic problem. So I have looked this up quite a bit.
