To see if the Compost is right, I’d encourage a read of both the articles and, more importantly, the “Coffee Room “ (aka Forum) of theyeshivaworld.com.
It’s a Hasidic/Orthdox website; most items of little interest to gentiles. But just go read the comments in the political threads.
If Wikipedia is to believed, the influx of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe accounted for this transition. They embraced socialism more than earlier Jews in the United States who had origins in countries other than Russia and Poland. Why would this be so? Could it be the history of Czarist oppression in Eastern Europe?
I believe a big antipathy toward the Republican Party among Jews is the belief that the right means religious bigotry. Many Jewish leftists have a BIG problem with Christianity, particularly Protestantism. They equate the GOP with religious conservatives, and although the KKK was mostly a manifestation of Southern Democrats, the left has tagged white supremacists as the same as Republicans. In their minds, Southern Baptist preachers are still donning white sheets in the shadows like its still 1955.
Am I right, or off base here?
