MGM Ironman - Think you can do this?
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 6/6/2019 | P Caughran

If you're into competitive shooting but want a little bit of a physical challenge to go with it. Look into the MGM Ironman competition. Its sort of like 3 gun competition with a CrossFit blended in to raise your heartbeat as you settle to shoot.

Challenges this year were the same as previous years, but some were slightly different. For instance, instead of having to haul a 150-pound dummy over to and on top of a 5-foot shooting platform, this year the competitors were given three options: a 100-pound, taped-up sack for a 60-second bonus; two steel targets weighing in around 60 pounds and tied together for a 30-second bonus; and the final option – for those who considered a slim 10-second bonus worthwhile – a baby doll placed in a cart with a pink Hello Kitty parasol.
The doll and umbrella had to be taken to the next stage, but there was a catch: the shooter had to skip (yes, you read that right: to add insult to injury, they had to skip) to the platform. A few big and strong shooters calculated this to be the best option and swallowed their pride.

Most competitors were young to middle-aged men, although there were a few women, many of whom shot with distinction, and even some junior shooters from 14 years old and upward.
The trooper class, which is undoubtedly the toughest because each shooter has to carry every single item they will need during the entire course, attracted all types and sizes. They were often seen carrying large and overflowing backpacks as well as several long guns slung and/or carried in soft cases. Many found themselves exhausted, but all stood victoriously at the end with a satisfied grin. Read the rest of MGM ironman.

Looks like fun. I have been thinking about getting into shooting competitions. It's difficult because of where I currently live (NYC) but I would like to begin. Which shooting associations are good for amateur shooters looking to get started?

My biggest concern is finding a true lefty pistol in either 9mm or .45. Any recommendations there are appreciated as well. I have done research and have yet to find lefty pistols under $4000.

In my not-so-humble opinion, the very best way a beginner can get into shooting competitions is to join the Glock Shooting Sport Foundation, and shoot one of their outdoor competitions.

It is the easiest, safest, and least intimidating way to get into the shooting competition world without breaking the bank.

a true lefty pistol

I've been shooting for years and have never heard of such a thing. However, I do have a Stag 2TL, which is lefty AR.

Cabot Arms makes two pistols that are true lefty 1911s (the S100 and S103 Southpaw models). They sell for $5000. Amazing work, but way too expensive.

I know of Stag, but haven't gotten one yet. I built a lefty AR-9 and I love it.

I've been shooting for years

Do competition handguns use standard loads or smaller loads to reduce recoil?

You said you were in NYC? There is a match June 15-16 in Jackson, NJ, and a match June 29-30 in Fulton, NY. Spectators are welcome, and it's free to watch. Just make sure to bring ear protection.

Go to a match, check things out, and watch how it goes. You shoot three different stages, and the matches are on Saturdays and Sundays, but you only need to attend one day to shoot.

The match I attend in Brighton, MI each year, I complete the course of fire in about 4 hours. I show up bright and early on Saturday morning, and am usually finished before noon.
