Rubber Bands on AK-47
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 6/19/2019 | D Taof

Ever used Rubber Bands to Replace an AK-47 Part? Cooking bacon on the barrel of an AK-47 is one thing, but replacing a vital part of the operating machine with rubber bands takes some serious outside of the box thinking!

Usually Youtuber TAOFLEDERMAUS is blowing things up with crude ammo innovations or hacking one. This time they did something that was really worthwhile. They replaced the return spring on an AK-47 with a bunch of rubber bands. The thing is no one has ever tried this.

What are the risks? Well, the bolt could slam into your face or worse the rubber band snapping at the shooter.
The idea was from Matt of Youtube MattV2099, where he rubber band a Glock so it wouldn’t fire. Well, TAOFLEDERMAUS (Darren) decided to make a weapon function with rubber bands.
The AK was chosen because they are notorious for being an unstoppable gun, you can fill them (mud, twinkies, etc..) with almost anything and it still fires. Read the rest of rubber band ak47.

Keep in mind, rubber bands are not what they used to be. I have some in the basement from the 1960’s and they are unchanged and elastic. The ones that come wrapped around my mail these days will dissolve in a week.

If reliability and safety is not an issue for you, then - it's your call.
Don't blame anyone else when you get hurt.
Just because it happens to work, for a little while, does not mean it's good engineering.

A little further down the list from the top 4, is a rule that states “make sure that your gun is safe to operate”. This is an irresponsible article. Someone somewhere is going to get hurt trying to replicate this.

in the 60s, rubber bands actually were made of rubber ... go figure.

Setting off an explosion inches away from one’s face, and expecting to contain the shrapnel with rubber bands... what could possibly go wrong?

As bad as the majority of AM Journal articles are, you really should include ‘guns’ as a keyword if you are going to post them so the articles can be found by the popular keywords.

This has been done years ago, it does however prove that an AK can be reliable in almost any situation. It has always been perfectly safe to shoot one without the top dust cover, it’s just sheet metal that keeps dirt out.

It was the invention of sturdy rubberbands that allowed man to overthrow the lobsters and assume dominion over the earth.

You would think that an enterprising lobster would use his pinchers to free his fellow breatheren.

Lobsters ARISE and throw off your rubber shackles.

The tiny lobster peg industry was dissolved and millions thrown out of work, but lobsters turned red everywhere ...

Years ago (when you could buy a complete AK parts kit, including chrome-lined barrel, for ~$125 ;^), there was a debate of sorts among AK builders, regarding the use of rivets or screws for attaching the trunnions to the receiver. To illustrate how little stress is actually placed on those connections by firing, somebody attached trunnions to their receiver by jamming multiple toothpicks in the holes. Surprisingly, the connections actually held for a few shots, before failing.

Obviously, some firearms-related information is mostly of academic (rather than practical ;^) interest...

Yeah, but the recoil spring and its guide rods keep the bolt carrier from coming back far enough to jump the rails. If you’re sure you’ve got enough rubber band tension to do that, then have at it I guess. I’ll pass.

I wouldn’t do it, but I saw someone do it ten years ago.

"This is an irresponsible article. "

Respectfully, what in the f else is new?

Just the daily edition of tripe from FR's resident purveyor of Stupid Hsit With Guns, and right in character for him, one would daresay.
