Actor Rip Torn, who appeared in over 100 films during a career spanning six decades, has died at 88, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Torn, born Elmore Rual Torn Jr., was perhaps best known for his role in the original “Men in Black” and his work on the HBO’s “The Larry Sanders Show,” for which he won an Emmy.

His role as the father of Mary Steenburgen in 1984 drama “Cross Creek” also earned Torn an Oscar nomination. Torn died peacefully at home in Lakeville, Connecticut, surrounded by his wife, Amy Wright, and their two daughters, the Hollywood Reporter reported.

He was a hell-raiser back in the day. RIP, Rip.

His name reminds me of Dick Trickle. That can’t be his real name, is it?

His real first name was Elmore? I can see why he invented another name. Rip had a very long career. I always got the impression that he was a friendly person, even off camera.

I loved him in Down Periscope: “I need a man with a tattoo on his d**k. Do I have the right man?”

Like Leslie Nielsen, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, and Robert Stack, Rip turned to comedy later in his career and was very good at it.

It was his real name, passed down in his family.

Utterly bizarre.

I’m watching “A Face In The Crowd.” (1957) Not five minutes ago I saw the young character “Barry Mills”, and, thinking he looked familiar went to the IMDB site to see the list of characters in the movie.

I saw that it was Rip Torn who played the part.

As I am wont to do, I checked the FR site a few minutes ago and found this thread.

This was the first I heard.

He did good evil. I remember him all the way back when he was trying to fix the card game between McQueen and Edward G. Robinson in the Cincinnati Kid.

I didn’t realize it was such a minor infraction. According to Wikipedia his last name at birth was Torn, but “Rip” was merely a well-struck infraction.
