If somebody wanted to kill him, they would have killed him and then taken his wallet to make it look like a robbery. The fact that they didn’t get the wallet doesn’t mean it wasn’t a robbery attempt gone wrong. When the victim resists and the robbers shoot him, it’s often enough to wake people up and start the robbers running away.
