Home Defense or SHTF - Get your Shotgun
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 8/27/2019 | S Miller

Semiautomatic rifles have their place. In the proper hands, with quality ammo and parts, they can shoot a lot of rounds a long way. There is also a place for bolt guns, but the relatively slow rate of fire demands that they be employed with some stand-off. At distance, even a Lee-Enfield or Mosin-Nagant could be effective.

My vote for home protection? The all-American choice is the Remington 870. The pump shotgun is incredibly simple. The controls? A safety button and a pump. Work the pump and shoot. Got a jam? Work the pump and shoot. Repeat as necessary and reload.

It is funny the way people take to a certain gun. My God-father used the Remington 870 in Vietnam. He told me to buy one. The 870 always felt right to me. I am not knocking the Mossberg or other pumps, but I like the 870. If my God-father had been issued a Mossberg, I would probably have one.
The 870 has great ergonomics and a Magpul stock makes them even better. The shotgun itself has a modern, modular design with many aftermarket upgrades available. I recommend a flashlight and Tritium sights for home-defense use. Read the rest of home defense shotgun.

I prefer the Mossberg. The shell lifter stays up thus preventing finger pinches when quickly loading shells. Both are great firearms.

“I prefer the Mossberg.”

As do I for the reason you stated. I also much prefer the location of the safety. No need to break your grip to engage or disengage it.

“Both are great firearms.”

Agreed.

This pro-shotgun author is “S Miller”. I wonder if that’s Joe Biden’s pen name.

We opted for the 500 defense model. It came with an 18 barrel and a factory fitted ghost ring sight. 5 round capacity. We use them for 3 gun shoots.

They are by far the most reliable long guns in our collection. They eat everything you feed them and function flawlessly. In less than 2 minutes they can become slug guns for deer hunting or field guns for birds and bunnies.

They were about $325 a copy when we bought them. The additional barrels were extra of course.

We love them.

I agree. I have an 870 but I have become a 590A1 fan over the years. Do not have one yet but I am saving.

Buy a Shotgun - featuring Slow Joe.

For the record: guns are dangerous, mine fell overboard in a tragic (but fortunate) boating accident.

My choice. Old and antiquish but it does the job and never misses. Scare power is awesome. Not much good if you are being invaded but perfect for a home break-in. Overland Stage DB 12ga.

As long as you're using a standard stock, this is true.
Comparing the ergonomics of the two with a pistol grip, the 870 is better for the forefinger safety.
A pistol grip on the Mossies requires a grip change to manipulate the safety - slowing you down.

That flashlight is in a bad spot, ahead of the muzzle like that...
I guess a robust LED could take it - for a few rounds.

I always thought the pumps on mossbergs rattled too much. It’s really the only flaw on an otherwise perfect shotgun

A guy I know does a lot of hunting in Alaska. He says the guides all carry double-barrel shotguns as defense against bears. When he asked about that, one guide told him you’re only going to get - at most - two shots off anyway.

I guess that guide would be out of luck if he were attacked by a herd of bears.

:)
