Travel interest in Greenland surges after President Trump's proposal to buy it

President Donald Trump is rapidly heating up travelers’ interest in one of the coldest places on earth.

The president’s abandoned proposal to purchase Greenland has captured global attention. The prime minister of Denmark—of which Greenland is an autonomous territory—has stated the island is not for sale.

Yet that’s not stopping travel apps like Hopper from seeing Greenland searches skyrocket over 300% in the wake of the geopolitical saga.

“A spike in the order of [nearly] 340% is totally unforeseen,” Hopper economist Hayley Berg told Yahoo Finance’s YFi PM.

He added: “when something goes into the media in such broad strokes like the Greenland story has, it can pick up global attention. That’s when we really see those massive spikes.”

Greenland has not exactly been high on the priority list for U.S. tourists. Only about 7,000-8,000 American citizens visit per year, according to recent government data. By contrast, 2.36 million traveled to France in 2017.

$&%#*. i was already planning on doing a greenland/iceland trip next summer (have many 6 month old facebook posts to prove it). Now the price will skyrocket as thousands of hipster greeney douchebags destroy it with their smug smirks of self satisfaction. Everything in life eventually turns itself into a south park parody

I could see Trump offering statehood to Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, and others. I would laugh my butt off and accept them in a heartbeat.

We could move our bases immediately from Germany.

I knew this would happen. I had looked at trips but not booked anything.
Now all the Instagrammers will beat me.
But I have seen Iceland, itself a victim of infrastructure lagging behind the overtourism.

Won’t be long before you see 2/3rds of the locals sporting John Deer green hats with MGGA emblazoned on the front.

(They can vote to leave the Danes and join us. It is Danish law.)

Why pay if we can get it for free?

As an autonomous territory, Greenland should be able to vote for independence and make their own deal with the USA.

As a goodwill gesture, we can let Denmark have Puerto Rico.

Greenland independence could happen. From Wikipedia:
"As part of the self-rule law of 2009 (section §21), Greenland can declare full independence if they wish to pursue it, but it would have to be approved by a referendum among the Greenlandic people.[19] A poll in 2016 showed that there was a clear majority (64%) for full independence among the Greenlandic people,[20] but a poll in 2017 showed that there was a clear opposition (78%) if it meant a fall in living standards.[21]"
