I think populism is as alive here in Canada as it is anywhere else, despite its bad rap by a smug, holier-than-everyone-else media and I think the Canadian election results will show a voter base thats fed up
Most ichthyologists will tell you, smelt are small, oily fish that travel in large schools seemingly without leadership and sometimes I am given to wonder whether Canada isnt a nation of smelt. As a not-so-proud citizen of Canada, I feel it necessary to apologize for the boorishness of the Government of Canada in general and Canadian voters in particular for kicking off an election on this day. As my friend Art Weinreb wrote in these pages, dropping the writ for a general election on the 18th anniversary of 9/11 amounts to a poke in the eye for Uncle Sam.
I thought I smelt something fishy...
I think the author’s a Pisces, probably working for scale.

In fourth grade, we had a saying: He who smelt it, dealt it.
I love smelt. My brother used to go smelt-running in the St Clair River using nets and hauling in piles of them. Coated and fried, you eat the bones. Very, very tasty.
Canada smelt OK last time I was there...
A biological life which is hardwired to behave within well defined habitats has a better/ leaner/ sharper mind than the clearly insane electorate of Canada.
[[smelt are small, oily fish]]
That taste GREAT fried in butter (everythign is better with butta) - the smaller smelt you can even eat the boens- just fry it well done-
When I was a kid, my mom would buy frozen smelt, then bread and fry them. We didn’t have much money, and I am guessing that smelt was a very cheap source of protein. We seemed to like them, but also had become accustomed to eating fresh fish caught at our grandparents’ lake cabin near Sheridan, MI.
“I am guessing that smelt was a very cheap source of protein.”
It used to be inexpensive bought frozen from the store. Out of curiosity, I just checked Meijer, Kroger and Walmart in my area, and the only one from which I got a hit was Meijer-frozen smelt for $5.99/lb. Costlier than I expected, but it’s hard to find frozen fish less expensive.
I wasn’t a big fan of fishing. I only did it 2 or 3 times (in the Black River) and one time I caught 5 lake perch. My dad and brothers fished more and brought home a lot of perch and bass. In order of preference for me: smelt, bass, perch.
Now, all I buy are salmon and tilapia, always frozen, usually from Aldi’s. I used to splurge and go to Whole Foods an hour away and buy “fresh” (most likely flash frozen, then thawed) salmon. Now, there’s a Whole Foods in town and I’ve yet to go there, even though I’m an Amazon Prime member and can get a discount. I almost bought some Branzini last week while it was on sale.
It was lots of fun when the smelt were running.
My father and I would set gill nets on lake Michigan
from Milwaukee down to the city of Chicago.
You would throw an anchor weight with a line as far
as you could then run the gill net down it, leave it
for a while then pull it back in. I never cared for them
buy my folks loved them. Lots of fun because there were
a lot of people fishing for them with bon fires and much
passing of booze and comradarie. Used to fish from
Montrose Harbor on the edge of Lincoln Park right in
Chicago. Family fun.
O Canada! Where pines and maples grow,

On another note, has anyone else been to Sarnia, Ontario?
New Hampshire? Close enough :) Sarnia? Probably drove through it once coming or going to Michigan.
I did too, growing up in St. Clair county. Wouldn’t do it now, knowing what I know about petrolia and the chemical valley just across the way.

Some summers I spent as much time in Sarnia as I did at home.

“petrolia and the chemical valley just across the way.”
I haven’t been to Port Huron in a while and I grew up there. I distinctly remember the chemical plants on the east side of the St. Clair River spewing all sorts of stuff into the atmosphere. I have no idea what was dumped in the river. When I was a kid, it didn’t occur to me I should be worried about it.
Not much smelt running there nowadays anyway. There are a couple counties in Michigan where there’s good smelt dipping for short periods of time in the spring, but St. Clair County is no longer one.
Sadly Bernier did not secure leadership of the CP.
I love smelt. Best fish my dear Mom fixed so many years age.
Oh- she was Canadian and all my blood is French/Scot Canadian.
