Who favored him? In fact a lot of Freepers were of the same opinion Trump expressed of him and for a long time.
+++++
My recollection as well. I was not happy with the way Trump handled the resignation but, IMHO, getting rid of Bolton was long overdue. There was a big philosophic gap between the two of them.

Never met the guy but I know a few people who have and know Bolton well. They all say he’s a “my way or the highway” kind of guy who just can’t salute smartly and carry out the boss’ plans if he decides not to take his advice.

He was great at the UN but went downhill after that.

Bolton was a critical part of the administration. He was the hawk who the opposition feared. He was a good negotiating tool to be used by Trump against country’s like Iran.

Apparently Trump, in an upcoming election year wants to start using some carrots instead of sticks. Good move, however we still need someone tough in there.

You are not by yourself with this current reality:

“I used to be a Bolton fan. I also supported GWB and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Bolton and Bush are still the same, my views have changed. After fourteen years of the Bush Doctrine I had my “Come to Trump and MAGA” moment. Good riddance to Bolton.”

Pancho Villa embarrassed Wilson and to his credit, he learned that before you go chasing all over a foreign country you’d better have a really clear idea why and what the desired outcome is. Wilson wrecked our relationship with Mexico but fortunately learned and did not repeat the mistake the next time he went to war.

I like Bolton for his intelligence and forthrightness, but I don’t think he ever saw a war he didn’t want to fight. Going into Venezuela was not in the US best interest and it sounds like Bolton could not give it up, so Trump got tired of hearing it.

Another issue is that winning a war often requires a level of force (brutality, if you will) that - for better or worse - we no longer seem willing to commit to. Our foes often feel no such scruples, so we fight on and on, year after year, with one hand tied behind our back, only to reach a stalemate with forces that have far less firepower.

Perhaps one reason we are unwilling to unleash our full might is that - as you say - we are often not fighting our own wars, but somebody else's, in which our own interests are secondary or even non-existent.

This is like baseball. We have a starting pitched. When it isn’t his day, we bring in #2. Then we bring in a middle reliever, a specialty pitcher for a couple of his type of batters. Then another reliever.

That the starter had a bad day is not reflection on his character. You might not want to start him in the World Series. But he can still be a good guy.

John Bolton is a good guy. He did his job im niddle relief. Now the coach has a new pitcher.

"He was everybody's favorite here at this site for the longest time."

One of the most visible things I have found and enjoyed being a member of the "conservative" movement for nigh on 55 years now is that we, as opposed to the left, don't run like lemmings with "group think" as our method of operation.

John Bolton to many of us has been and always be a War Hawk/Neocon relishing in the blood of Americans being needlessly sacrificed on foreign soil.

Unfortunately, there may well be more neocons permeating this Forum than I care for, but we all have the right to feel the way we do.

I for one just don't appreciate being labeled with "everybody". Yes there is a bit of "group think" here but thankfully it is not a requirement.

As usual good points. But when Bolton would make statements against any of Putins playmates the Julius/Ethel Rosenberg crowd would go nuts.

"War is not something to be done every three months."

Especially if they (wars) are prosecuted in the manner we have been employing since the end of WWII. Endless wars without victory as the goal that loose countless numbers of brave young Americans, simply to cut and run at the eventual end.

George W Bush was adored here in the first six years of his reign

Criticizing him could have you tossed and did for 100s if not 1000s

It was ridiculous frankly the high school girl fan club stuff and wolf packs running down all dissent to purge it

Honesty is a rare commodity these days, especially posting thoughts and opinions anonymously behind a screen and keyboard.

I salute you sir. There was a time I too was in the neocon camp along with John Bolton. Sometime (couple to a few years) after returning from Viet Nam, I began to see the light.

The more my eyes opened the more bitter I became.

I am not above engaging stated enemies on the battle field, with the losses that entails, as long as the mission is to totally vanquish the enemy. If we are honest with ourselves we will understand that hasn’t happened since WWII.

"Those of us who are conservatives instead of Republicans have recognized him as a war-mongering globalist pr!ck for years. "

A most succinct and well stated thought.

I, too, resemble that remark.

Perhaps one reason we are unwilling to unleash our full might is that - as you say - we are often not fighting our own wars, but somebody else's, in which our own interests are secondary or even non-existent.

As I posted in an earlier thread, I wonder if there is a valid concern about American hegemony in our region.

If we ignore Venezuela, are we allowing the Russians to establish a base in the Gulf of Mexico, which has historically been ours to control?

The Russians were using Cuba to proxy for them in Venezuela, which is why President Trump rescinded Obama's opening up of Cuba to American markets. It's one thing to say we don't want to start unnecessary wars, but it's another to turn a blind eye to Russia getting a foothold in our strategic waterway.

So, I don't fault Bolton for raising a concern. Hopefully, President Trump has a vision, if not a coherent plan, for how to deal with this. Maybe he's thinking that time is on his side, that he has other more pressing needs at the moment (like the border, the Democrat coup, righting the court, 2020...).

Let's hope that's the case, that the President can stall incursion into Venezuela long enough to get some stability at the border, to flush out the Democrats, to get China to play nice for awhile, to win in 2020, and then take on the Venezuela Problem.

Anyway... that's my top-of-mind though on this. I'm interested in other thoughts on this. Is it a strategic vulnerability to step back and let Russia into the Gulf of Mexico?

I am loathe to post this, as I decided long ago when I disagreed with someone here on FR, it is better off to leave it alone. As most disagreements here seem to turn into “flame wars”.

That being said, I am still cleaning the coffee I spewed all over my keyboard while reading your opinion on the UN.

Think I better leave it at that.

In my opinion sir, you are wrong.

Let's cut the crap. He was everybody's favorite here at this site for the longest time.

Not everybody's favorite, but the best UN Ambassador I've ever seen.

Bolton is a hawk, but like many, thought that once we kicked the hell out of their military in the mid-east, we could use the post WWII tactics and convert them to democracy.

There is a YUGE difference between countries like Germany and Japan and mooselimb terrorist tribes, that prefer screwing young boys over their 8 wives.

The only solution to the mooselimb problem is my tag line, and like cock roaches, you need to get them all.
