Pelosi and Schumer take hard line with Trump on gun background checks

Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer warned President Donald Trump on Sunday that any firearm legislation that falls short of universal background checks for gun sales “will not get the job done,” complicating delicate negotiations between the president and a group of senators.

Trump has been discussing potential legislation with senators in both parties that would expand background checks but would not go as far as House-passed legislation that would apply them to all gun sales with limited exceptions. Trump issued a veto threat on the House’s background-checks bill earlier this year, and few Republicans in Congress support it.

But in a conversation with Trump on Sunday morning, the House speaker and Senate minority leader indicated to Trump that they were taking a much harder line than rank-and-file senators involved in the talks.

“This morning, we made it clear to the president that any proposal he endorses that does not include the House-passed universal background checks legislation will not get the job done, as dangerous loopholes will still exist and people who shouldn’t have guns will still have access,” Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a joint statement.

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) today (15 Sep 19) on This Week with Georgie Stepalloverus:

Cruz said he spoke with both McConnell and Trump this past week about his proposal, which he argued would improve and strengthen background checks while protecting Second Amendment rights.

When Stephanopoulos asked Cruz about proposals to expand background checks to private sales, Cruz argued that Democratic proposals were a slippery slope towards gun confiscation.

"If you have a federal government background check for (private transactions), what you will see the next step to be is the only way to enforce that is a federal gun registry and a gun registry is the step you need for gun confiscation," he said.

Cruz voiced opposition to Democrats' proposals for gun control, including that of former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, who has called for mandatory gun buybacks.

"The federal government should not be confiscating guns from law-abiding citizens," Cruz said.

Meanwhile, over on Twitter:

Beto O’Rourke tweeted:

Credit cards have enabled many of America’s mass shootings in the last decade—and with Washington unwilling to act, they need to cut off the sales of weapons of war today.

and...

Banks and credit card companies must:
1 Refuse to take part in the sale of assault weapons.
2 Stop processing transactions for gun sales online & at gun shows without background checks.
3 Stop doing business with gun & ammo manufacturers who produce or sell assault weapons

“As well as other criminals and our favorite.. the government. What do NOAA, the IRS and the dept of Ed need with fully automatic weapons? Plenty of militarized PDs as well.”

Agree fully. We have over 120,000 armed federal agents as of 2008. The arrogance and aggressive behavior of our ruling class is largely being fueled by this massive unconstitutional military force. Its time the people demand the federal government be disarmed. There is no Constitutional power that authorizes any federal police force much less a nation sized army of them.

how are these “universal” background checks going to be enforced?

I would be concerned about BATF&E sting operations.

A nice AR shows up on TexasGunTrader (for instance) and a meet is arranged in a gun store parking lot via text... what are the odds?

Do a background check for every new passport and passport card.

Mark the passport (card) with guns ok or no guns.

Show your passport (card) to your dealer that is less than 60 days old, have him write down your passport (card) number and name and gun info, pay and carry home your piece.

Make this the way guns must be sold.

It maintains buyer confidentiality. Bars states from accessing dealer lists, but give states the right to request the information by presenting the gun to the dealer or dealer’s successor. Dealer must destroy information within 24 to 36 months of it’s collection.

Democrats’ want universality. We want confidentiality.

Pelosi and Schumer would like to see President Trump lose a few tens of millions of votes in 2020.

Conservatives who shouldn’t have guns will still have them,
and that is a problem!,” Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a joint statement.

Looks like the Dems are (purposefully or accidentally) giving the Repubs an out. "We won't accept anything except EVERYTHING WE WANT."

You are right

Unfortunately, I think Chuck and Nancy are talking tough because they know or assume that Trump is gonna wheel out UBCs and they can declare a huge victory over him.

The whole Federal Firearms License system was sold as the solution to depriving criminals from the ability to have guns. It hasn't worked since 1968 when it was passed and never could have worked.

Now, just as in 1968, the anti-gun Democrats are assuring us that "Universal Background Checks" will solve the problem. It won't. When the failure is clearly demonstrated, will the Democrats agree to reverse the law?

NO! They will simply suggest that we need even more gun control to accomplish what they have never accomplished in the past and will never accomplish in the future.

Criminals and lunatics are simply unaffected by liberal fantasies.

This is pure gun registry.
Making it easy to confiscate at will.

Everyone needs to acknowledge that and the historical significance.

Refuse to give a single inch to any more of this dangerous emotional manipulation the left is pushing.
