Well into its second week on strike against General Motors, the United Auto Workers union has received full-throated support from all the major 2020 Democratic presidential candidates and solidarity visits to the picket line by many of them.
But outside the GM Technical Center in suburban Detroit where cutting-edge cars are designed and prototypes are made, plenty of striking auto workers are backing a politician who mostly has been quiet about the walkout: President Donald Trump.
Yeah, Im a Trump supporter. There are a lot of us, and that goes against our party line in the union, but Ive got to think for myself, said Robert Senkmajer, a 60-year-old wood model maker. I think the guys outrageous. Hes a hot dog, but hes our hot dog, man. Trump is making stuff happen.
Blue-collar workers like Senkmajer in Rust Belt states like Michigan helped deliver the presidency to Trump, who drew more support from union households than any other Republican presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan.

Seems to me like maybe the UAW had better wake up.
Word has it that the strike is not affecting the 2020 Corvette production.
I hope not!
“the United Auto Workers union has received full-throated support from all the major 2020 Democratic presidential candidates”
Hilarious. What’s their “full throated support” statement? “We’re with you - we have 10 million Mexicans and H1B’s on the way to scab out your jobs”?
What century do the retros at the Tribune live in? The Rat party is simply the anti-white party now. No upper midwest working class guy has any place at all in that party, unless of course they have the appropriate melanin content in their skin.
They might as well publish in Spanish and hope they get the carniceria coupon ad business.
Theoretically, the Union is there to help the workers.
The workers like Trump.
Trump is helping the workers.
Theoretically, the Union should be open about supporting Trump.
The fact that the union leadership still seems to cling to the Democrats just tells me that money changes hands and that the Union leadership is essentially bribed to toe the party line. Screw the damn workers.
Somebody tell the auto workers this is not 1970. People are not that thrilled with your product to begin with. You just had an 8 year vacation.
When the residents of Michigan have to sell off all their lakefront homes to make room for all the people driving foreign cars they will remember that they have been there before.
“But outside the GM Technical Center in suburban Detroit where cutting-edge cars are designed..”
That may be part of the problem...the suits are dicking around with electric cars and all the other “green” crap,
Yeah for pushrods!
