Britain faces an army recruitment crisis, with frontline combat units operating as much as 40% below strength, figures obtained by the Guardian reveal.
Data released by the Ministry of Defence under freedom of information laws shows the number of soldiers in the British army’s infantry regiments has declined steadily over the past five years. There are more than 2,500 fewer personnel in frontline units than 2015, and all 16 regular regiments have shortfalls.

Don’t surprise me. Recruiting has always been bad when the economy is doing good and vice versa. Then you add years of an operations tempo that has not slowed down for 15+ years and you’re also going to see mid-level NCOs and young officers splitting and who can blame them?
40% is a huge amount for deficient troops.
That sounds like something that was allowed to happen.
Even 20% is cause for alarm in a developed nation.

Exactly. Given the size of their force and the number of leg infantry they have even in good times, that OPTEMPO has to be a killer. And I’m really hoping there’s no shortage of volunteers for SAS/SBS and Royal Marines. Ugh. Sounds like a sticky situation.
And then you have a society over there that increasingly seems to not value military service (and I wonder what the pay is like for British troops these days?), combined with a social welfare-dependent class of young people, like those Extinction Rebellion fools, and you have a recipe for future disaster for the UK, in my opinion.
They undoubtedly have quotas and targets: females over males, Muslims over non-Muslims, LGBTQ over straights, immigrants over born in UK.... Thus, no division or battalion can be considered compliant and full until all above are met.
