Having said that, I think Trump is right to toot his horn for the benefit of a domestic audience that thinks this is just one long, drawn-out slugfest with no end in sight. It’s always good to have occasional key moments highlighted to remind people that while there are many down days, there are also up days as well, such as this one.

al Baghdadi is simply getting the respect that he gave others.

He has an understanding of human nature that defies explanation, except that it’s a gift from God.

It wasn’t as if we were going to (1) have him pulled apart by horses, (2) burn him alive or (3) inflict upon him a death by slow slicing. If he had surrendered, that would have been human but a real blow to the reputation of a man whose stock in trade was sending suicide bombers on one-way missions.

But that's where projection comes in.

He thought we'd treat him like he treated others who were his enemies.

But that's OK by me. He offed himself and he's gone for good now and no chance of harming anyone ever again.

The plus side is that he did it to himself so nobody can be accused or come to trial for killing him. It actually protects the soldiers who did the operation.

The guy wasn’t born in a cave. He knew what he was in for. He knows every single al Qaeda operative captured to date, including Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, the al Qaeda money man who kept the organization running and was responsible for the 3,000 dead on 9/11, is still alive. If Baghdadi had surrendered, he had decades in confinement at Guantanamo left, and perhaps multiple appeals, if his case was ever brought to trial. Given that the number of American non-combatants killed by him was perhaps a handful at best, and mostly through evidence that would be questionable in a civilian court, I’d say he had a good chance of getting away with a life term in a Supermax prison.
