My Epson Printer Hacked My Router
03/07/2020 | CharlesOconnell

Posted on 03/07/2020 6:40:51 AM PST by CharlesOConnell

The printer installation bypassed my router's security. Essentially, it asked for a "User ID", the router name, but not the password: presumably, on the pretext of user convenience. It means, I could hijack my neighbors' routers and use them for printing without their ever knowing anything about it.

I love Epson printers. I got 10 years' service from 2 printers. I only had to buy new printers when operating system upgrades could not use the drivers or I couldn't get ink.

I tried to get a new printer that doesn't have color cartridges. The Epson printer I came up with still has them, it's still tells me I'm running out of ink when I've never printed any color documents, but it doesn't bother me.

I understand the idea of a brute force attack, but don’t a lot of logins time out after three or so failed attempts?

If it’s a wireless printer, it needs to get on the network so you can print wirelessly. The printer has to recognize the router, and the router has to recognize the printer. Plus, a password is involved if the network is secure.

I’m not all that familiar with this stuff even though we have a HP wireless printer, so I’m sure there’s more to it. It is nice though, to print from the laptop or cellphone anywhere in the house. The printer shows up on the list of printers that are available for your particular print program.

Printers are evil incarnate but HP is the ultimate in evil.

Best part of those is you can buy refill kits to hack your toner cartridge. I refill mine once every three years thru a capped hole in the cartridge.

Color is not needed unless you are a photographer. Color is useless actually.

Unless you have some need to print in colors, buy a cheap and reliable black/white printer from Samsung or Brother and print quickly and cheaply for years.

Color printers are the manufacturers way of getting rich selling ink.

Two Brother units and zero complaints.

My sales people and other work from home scammers always ask for a printer recommendation. Brother I say. They install well on our laptops.

What do almost all buy? The cheap and buggy HP. I tell any and every one to avoid Has Problems.

Every so often, one of the hard of hearing will call me to fix a printer problem. Technically I am not responsible beyond installing the drivers. No admin rights for most regulars. Always HP with a wireless problem. I tell them to get a USB cable.

Just wait until you find out that your neighbor watches your baby monitor and your video doorbell feeds and controls your refrigerator. He also occasionally taps into your ApplePay account and your Hulu and Netflix subscriptions.

Yes, but it is not used in every situation.

I think ALL PRINTERS ARE EVIL.

Started 20 years ago with a Canon printer over $500, could not get it to work, called customer service repeatedly, finally was told I called too much and needed to buy a $500 warranty for them to talk to me - Never anything Canon again.

Bought a Sharp copier, the cartridge wouldn’t set right $250/stop charge for them to come and look at it.

Bought a color laser Brother to print postcards, it gets too hot and the postcards come out curved and have to be straightened to print other side.

Just bought Epson, the ink is gone in no time.

I HATE PRINTERS!

it's still tells me I'm running out of ink when I've never printed any color documents,

That might be on account of the infamous yellow dots. Apparently most laser printers put a unique pattern of next-to-invisible yellow dots on your documents so that law enforcement can identify which printer any given document come from. (Apparently that's how Reality Winner was identified as having leaked classified information.)

The result is that if your printer runs out of yellow ink, it won't print, even though you only want to print black-and-white documents. Then, to disguise the fact that yellow ink is key, they make the printer so that it won't print if you run out of any color.

I am not a printer expert, but this is what I gather from reading.

I found it cheaper and more convenient to go with laser printers once I decided I had no reason to have to print color

We use both, but prayerful research show me the the 8100-8600 series HP take a black cartridge that is the largest cap. i know of at 53.0 ml (the standard cartridge holds 11 ml of ink), and the reman cartridges for it on Ebay (House of Toners) are 1 black and 3 color for under 12.00 still, with free ship . Yes, that is correct, glory to God. And they work well (though HP will interrogate you, but let you use them if you honestly affirm they are not genuine, and thus lose warranty). You may need to hold down the resume button.

I tried the refill kits once but I print 20-25,000 pages a year and, for me, they are not time efficient. Brother toner cartridges do a great job for us.

One of our printers is a color ‘Brother INKvestment’ with large cartridges. When we DO have a call for color output it does the job well. It’s 18 months old and we are only 1/2 way through the cartridges.

Boy, I here you there.

I have tried to get all of my clients onto Brother printers for the same reason. It’s been too long since HP produced a printer that wasn’t crap. I did keep one old HP portable printer around as it was — just the right size — to place on the passenger floor, behind the driver seat, to make a cooler fit perfectly in place on long trips.

That car hit a deer, it AND the old HP are now gone...

Thumbs up for the Brother laser printers. One in my office is my personal one, and I have had it for many years.

I got a low-end Brother laser printer for 50 bucks with free shipping (a cyber Monday deal) a few years ago.

Works great-only 2 gripes. It’s a real pain to clear a paper jam. That only happens when you foolishly print with stuff piled on top, though.

Also, the hand feeder always pulls the paper in crooked.

I’d have no hesitation buying another one.

I will never buy anything made by Canon.

My first ink jet was a Canon. It stopped working almost immediately. The store where I bought it (CrapUSA) wouldn’t replace it. They are long since out of business, thank goodness.

I contacted Canon, and they told me I had to haul it to some place in center city Philadelphia for service. I eventually tore it apart and found an improperly seated cable, which fixed the problem.

The problem that couldn’t be fixed was that the color ink cartridges would dry out quickly even if you didn’t use them, and it refused to print in b&w if the color cartridges were empty.

That printer went in the trash.

This makes no sense. A printer is just a device that would be on your network. To join the network you’d have to tell it which ssid, and the network password at a minimum.

If you can join the network, any device type, without doing that your router is not configured correctly.

If you are using that WPS (press a button the router) to allow a device to join then who knows. I never use WPS.
