The principle that a government entity -- which includes a state university --can restrict the language its employees may use in the workplace is pretty well-established. A professor who routinely referred to black students as n****** probably isn't someone any of us would want teaching their kids.

Not sure this is really a constitutional issue as much as a legislative/regulatory one.

I had a similar revelation when I was teaching/department chair at an art school in the south. There were enough confused students in my program that I quickly lost track of who was a “he” that day and who was a “she”. So I started calling all students by their last names, irrespective of what they were claiming to be. It also had the affect of leveling any the social construct in the classroom where I could say whatever I wanted as long as I only barked at the students using their last name. Worked like a charm.

Unless it is being done repeatedly and on purpose it is unfair that a simple mis-statement of a person’s gender is enough to get you fired or put on your record. If someone mistakenly calls a NORMAL person the wrong gender do they get punished? If not the Professor is being singled out and discriminated against.

PS. Why hasn’t the Trump admin started cutting off federal funding to schools going along with this nonsense and discriminating against conservative groups and speakers on campus? What the F has Betsy DeVos been doing for over 3 years?
