Best Explanation of the Toilet Paper Crisis I've Read.

Found this in some blog comments:

"Some smart people have analyzed the toilet paper hoarding and concluded it isn’t that at all. Their view is that there are two “channels” of TP production – commercial and domestic. The TP manufactured for commercial purposes is more utilitarian and less luxurious, is made to fit more industrial dispensing methods and is consumed by the pallet. Domestic TP is designed to appeal to one’s sense of comfort and luxury, a single roll at a time and is available in small multi-roll packs, generally.

Only a few manufacturers produce for both demand streams, and there is no simple conversion of one stream into the other to meet fluxuating demand. The result is that people are no longer needing to use TP when they’re out and about at work, at school, shopping, all the usual things. Instead, they’re confined to their homes and the vast majority of TP demand is now placed on the domestic stream.

This isn’t actually a hoarding phenomenon, with people cramming closets and storage units full of multi-packs of domestic TP rolls. Nor are they using more TP than usual. Instead, they’re NOT using the abundant supply of commercial TP because they’re not in the usual places to need to do so.

Eventually, the production of TP for the domestic stream could ramp up to meet the demand, but manufacturers need to anticipate whether things will return to normal before that might happen. That would leave an over-supply for a diminished domestic demand just as people are back to consuming the TP in the commercial stream.

Supply and demand will always come into balace over time.

Can’t find yeast. Can’t figure that one out. Bread is plentiful and freezes well.

I was at the store and score another 12 pack. A guy next to me put four 12 packs in his cart plus some kleenix.
Maybe he has a big family or is reselling at a big profit?

My conspiracy is the run on tp and paper towels was intentional. They chose water, tp, paper towels and hand sanitizer. The first three are the targets the sanitizer just makes it legit.
How do you create the vision there is a shortage, you empty the shelves. The paper isle, comparatively, has very little inventory and it’s cheap. This also applies to the water aisle. You get a few photos of an empty paper isle for the news and viola a few people panic and all of a sudden there are empty shelves all over place. The system couldn’t replenish this physical volume quick enough before the hoarding began. It’s self perpetuating.

I have a relative that has close to 5,000 rolls of TP at home. She has an entire closet full of it and it is stashed all over the house.

It's an obsession with some people.

As for me, I have every James A. Michener book ever written in my library and I've only read a few. Hawaii, Texas, Alaska, Space and Source. All the others I have not yet read. Is it worth reading the others? I do not know. I'm rather tired of Michener's writing formula.

If you like Mitchner you’ll enjoy this book, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Land_Remembered.

I’ve read it twice.

I can’t remember Publix running out of water even in hurricane season. But they’ve been running low on a lot of stuff since the panic started. Strange times we live in.

Among Western Canadian working folks back in the day, that was known as “taking a CPR crap”.

It’s a great read. I am partial to it because I spent my teen years tromping around the wild interior areas of South and Central FL.

If this is the “Best Explanation” for toilet paper shortage then how do you explain Johnny Carson’s joke about a toilet paper shortage?

"But speaking of shortages - apparently a large condom manufacturer in southeast Asia (Malaysia?) shut down." Is "large" referring to the condom or the manufacturer? Hard to believe there is much of a market for large condoms in southeast Asia.

So, easy solution: Have the commercial manufacturers start distributing to stores for household consumption since that’s where the demand is. Luxury is not high on my priority list when I got to go.
