On Tuesday afternoon, President Trump made a crucial move to protect the nations food supply chain. Faced with the closings of a number of food processing plants around the country some of the largest of which, under the Smithfield name, are owned by Chinese interests the President invoked the Defense Production Act to order food processing plants to remain up and running in order to ensure the nations supermarket shelves remain stocked with meats and other food.
Jennifer Jacobs ✔ @JenniferJJacobs · 2h BREAKING: Trump plans to order meat processing plants to STAY OPEN, declaring them critical infrastructure under Defense Production Act. Order meant to stave off shortage of beef, chicken, eggs, pork. Plant closures could have shut down as much as 80% of capacity, source says.
Jennifer Jacobs ✔ @JenniferJJacobs BREAKING NEWS: Trump executive order will mandate various meat/egg processing plants stay open. Trump had signaled in Oval minutes ago he'd sign an EO today aimed at Tyson Foods's liability. The order, though, will not be limited to Tyson, I'm told.https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-28/trump-says-he-s-issuing-order-for-tyson-s-unique-liability?utm_content=politics&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&cmpid%3D=socialflow-twitter-politics

Jennifer Rubin ✔ @JRubinBlogger He can order them to open but what if no one shows up? Will natl guard operate?

Hell use the DPA on Tyson, but on to get more testing kits made! (Of course, he hasnt needed to use it to get test kits made since so many great U.S. companies voluntarily stepped up to the plate to do it.)
Workers have died in these plants!!!! (No, they havent.)
What about Tysons liability??????? (Hes going to sign an EO to take care of that issue.)
And on and on the inanity goes. Expect to see all of these moronic talking points rolled out this afternoon by Juan Williams on The Five.
This is absolutely the right action for the President to take given the state of play right now. The U.S. population has taken all of the restrictions related to the governments response to the Wuhan Virus quietly to this point, largely because of the various stimulus bills designed to mask all the financial hardships and the fact that no one is going hungry because of it to this point. But that peaceful acquiescence and the increasingly tiresome were all in this together apart messaging would go down the tubes in a hurry if the pork, chicken and beef suddenly disappears like all the toilet paper suddenly did back in March.
You want to see massive civil unrest in this country like Jennifer Rubin and her fellow DC dimwit brigade are wishing for? There is no surer way to bring that about than through large-scale interruptions in the food supply chain.
This is the right move at the right time by President Trump. All else is just so much noise parroted by a pack of critics who never missed a meal in their privileged lives.
That is all.
bttt
Wow, this has all becoming a screaming mess. One side is trying to keep it going so people don’t riot, rebel, starve and die. The other side is trying to train wreck the entire economy of this country and subsequently other countries JUST to get political power. Talk about good vs. evil....
Should be interesting to see how the media chooses between Closing the Plants and Millions of Americans Starving to Death.
On the one hand, I want the food supply chain functioning.
On the other, I don’t want infected or exposed people processing my food.
How are they going to address the later?
Please keep track of all the Chinese (CP) owned/controlled corporations in America. Could come in handy later.

Its called cooking it.
L
Cook it.
Might be a little hard to keep the plants open if the workers are all sick. We’d have to put Americans to work in the plants. OMG
Betting 99% of city folk would puke if they saw the inside of one of those plants.
Give me Bacon, or Give me Death!!
Right now, I’d go to my local butcher or if you live like I do in “fly over” country, there are local meat packing/processing operations where locals take their beef and pork to be processed for them. They always have a full meat counter.
You are probably right, but in elementary school in the 60’s in Los Angeles, we went to the Farmer John processing plant in Los Angeles. How things have changed.

~~~
Doesn’t it seem like that should be under some agencies purview somewhere?
I’m not one to wish for even more bureaucrats, but I’m trying to imagine during the cold war a bunch of soviet controlled corporations inside the U.S. somehow flying under the radar. Wouldn’t happen.
And have to pay more in salaries? Not going to happen.
We might have to build a few Wet Markets to keep up with the demand for meat.
Yes...we need to nationalize all the Chinese owned companies and properties
OK, but how will they stay open if Juan and Juanita don’t show up to gut the chickens?
Ditch the steak tartare for the next 2 years.
People have gone stupid insane over this hyped virus stuff. No doubt there might be some active virus on raw fresh meats, but I have NEVER eaten raw chicken or pork . . . oysters, yes, and seared rare tuna steak, and maybe an occasional medium rare steak, but never underdone chicken or pork.
Yay! Trump saved our bacon!
