Good morning!

I read this
“Whatever people worship and hold as their highest good, that is their god”
and had to keep it in my head (OK, aphorisms on my computer).
I have heard this use several times and in other places.

Do you have any source reference for this phrase?
Or, has it been passed on “from antiquity”.
It sounds quite Augustinian.

Would that be close enough? Might even be more clear on the matter.

It’s similar to what Luther writes in the Large Catechism on the First Commandment: “whatever you set your heart on and put your trust in is truly your god.”
