They’ve known about the hallucinations with hydroxychloroquine for years. Here’s a medical report from 2014:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15235536/

But there is a more recent study by Dr. David Juurlink, Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, and a senior scientist at ICES and he identifies a number of other side effect of the drug:

Cardiac arrhythmias
Hypoglycemia
Neuropsychiatric effects, such as agitation, confusion, hallucinations and paranoia
Interactions with other drugs
Metabolic variability (some people metabolize chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine poorly and a small percentage metabolize them rapidly, which affects the response to treatment)
Overdose (chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine are highly toxic in overdose and can cause seizures, coma and cardiac arrest)
Drug shortages (patients with autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and other chronic diseases, who take hydroxychloroquine to treat these conditions could have problems accessing this drug)

It disturbs me the Trump is taking it. The chemical has as lot of baggage.

Read the side effects of any drug and it would scare you to death. You have to have a doctor assess your ability to take a drug and if you have issues, to find another solution. But just to freak over the side effects would cause many to forgo a treatment that would be beneficial to them.

but if you check ibuprofin, lipitor, no-doze, lisinopril, water pills you can find similar side-affects possible after observed in testing. Could be as little as 0.01% or related to other factors and still must be listed. Grasping.

The one I have heard for sure is the older/simpler version (without the hydroxy- part) affect the version for some, usually only temporary. Was better than Malaria (yech).

I did two searches with phrase “is hydroxychloroquine safe to use”

The first search was for results from anytime including up to today and the first result was from the FDA.
https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-safety-and-availability/fda-cautions-against-use-hydroxychloroquine-or-chloroquine-covid-19-outside-hospital-setting-or

At the top of that link it reads as follows:

FDA cautions against use of hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine for COVID-19 outside of the hospital setting or a clinical trial due to risk of heart rhythm problems
Does not affect FDA-approved uses for malaria, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis

So as of now FDA says it is risky to take for the coronavirus but not so for malaria, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis? Really?

Then I searched from 1955 to January 1 this year and top link was here which has a cool pdf about taking it for going to malaria infected countries, and discusses risk in a rational manner. From CDC.

https://www.cdc.gov/malaria/resources/pdf/fsp/drugs/hydroxychloroquine.pdf

It looks like the FDA wants to kill people because advocates of hydroxychloroquine say use it as early as you can after getting infected (yes with a zinc supplement of course)

I have family members who have taken this drug for years. They’ve not had any issues, although one person said their eye doctor could see changes in the blood vessels in her eyes. That’s a known issue.
