When the Portuguese left Mozambique, the natives accused them of pouring cement into the sewers to sabotage to the fledgling country. Turned out the natives simply used them as dumps, throwing all kinds of objects in - until they didn’t function anymore. Rather than deal with the truth, they’d rather just repeat the lie: “Portuguese poured cement down the sewers”.
Some people will do nothing to better their situation, instead attacking the very people and culture that provided their material comforts.
