The man is what she called a second-hander, the type who gravitates toward power. By the end of her novel, his character played an important role in the destruction of the United States. Another problem laying the groundwork for the pandemic panic is innumeracy. Most of the American public appears to be unable or unwilling to critically look at the numbers.
