I experienced the 1964 race riots in Rochester, NY...was 12 and in my Great Uncle’s car when we came upon a blockage in the street where a lot of them yutes were rocking a car back and forth - they saw us coming and let the lady in the car drive off as they turned to us. My uncle told me I was gonna learn something and hit the gas in his ‘64 Caprice and there was an actual thump as he sideswiped one who got tangled up with the others trying to scatter when they realized he wasn’t going to stop....I never got a chance to see if the person went down but I felt the thump ...
Then Uncle Howie looked at me and said, “If you don’t give them any more respect than they give you, you have a chance to win. If you’re polite like that lady, you already lost.”
Uncle Howie was only 5’6” or so and maybe 140 lbs, but he was known for his “scrappiness”...
