OR personnel wear masks for catch LARGE droplets if the surgeon sneeze and also to protect themselves from splattered blood.

Suppressing VIRUS transmission was NEVER the intent behind masking in the operating room. Get over yourself.

False.

Also if masks worked so well, why did China get hit so hard with the virus?

Junior mint fell into an open wound. If you’re walking around with an open wound in your torso, a mask may not help prevent death.

The mask is only secondarily to protect you from becoming infected. Its primary purpose is to capture virus-spreading respiratory droplets from anyone who is infected; be they asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic (or even highly symptomatic but too irresponsible to stay home).

If everyone who is infected (whether they know they’re infected or not) is wearing a properly fitting, properly made mask, then the number of virus-carrying respiratory droplets being propelled into an area with other people are significantly reduced. This reduces transmission rate. A reduced transmission rate means it’s easier to monitor and control the spread and easier to protect the most vulnerable.

water droplets well in the range of all the masks for filtration,

Here's a simple test for you Jon, put your mask on then hold a mirror up to the mask and exhale. If the mirror fogs up then your mask is worthless......

Agreed that there needs to be significantly better user education around proper use of masks, but that’s not an intrinsic problem with masks themselves. That’s why I specifically pointed to masks being helpful when they’re properly made, properly worn, etc.

I think the solution there is a broadly targeted public education campaign giving simple tips on what types of masks are appropriate, when they should be worn, how they should be fit, and when and how to dispose of them. The solution isn’t to say “well a lot of people don’t know how to do X correctly, so we just can’t do X”. Most people had no clue how to work TV remotes when they first appeared. We didn’t throw them out and go back to using the dial on the TV. People figured it out.

What if it’s aerosols under 5um that are fogging the mirror? Then it isn’t the mask that’s worthless; it’s the test.

You are wrong and you are close to earning the moniker you have assigned the surgeon.

The water/mucoid droplets dry on mask surfaces and then particles flake off releasing said viral particles thru anyway. Surgical masks are only good for about 2 hours for the good things they do do and then need to be replaced. N95 masks can go longer and can be used and reused for up to 24 hours assuming one hasn’t contaminated the inside of the mask from the outside. Not all covid virii are contained in droplets but some are aerosolized when breathing or coughing so the pass thru can occur directly. The seals are never truly air tight and the droplets/particles blow out the tops and bottoms of the masks anyway!

The only effective strategy is simple hand washing and smart social distancing and to quarantine oneself when one is sick. Taking some zinc and quercetin or HCQ daily(if one can get it) might be helpful in warding off an attack or squashing Covid early.

Perhaps a well placed child is needed to shame the rest of us into realizing that the emperor is truly naked.

“You don’t get it.

A flea can fit through a chain link fence but the dog it travels on cannot.”

no, you don’t “get it”. Fleas don’t use dogs as a transport vehicle....they jump and crawl THROUGH, UNDER and OVER fences to get to your dog.....

Do you meet with patients when you’re infectious with a respiratory disease? I wonder if you might consider wearing a mask in that circumstance.

Also, people rarely cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue when they’re out and about. Most people cover them with their hands (or maybe their inner elbow if they’re up on the latest etiquette). And then they don’t wash their hands, not immediately anyway. Which means whatever is on their hands winds up on the next door handle or touchscreen.

That’s part of why I think masks may actually help to some degree, as imperfect as they are. It’s better that the saliva from your cough or sneeze goes into the mask than into your hands. IOW they’re sort of like garbage cans—yeah, they’re kind of nasty but it’s better to have the trash concentrated in one place rather than strewn all over.

I have worked in industrial clean rooms. Very similar procedure. As for today, yeah the masks are just for show.

““MASKS! Folks, let a surgeon of 30 years (a.k.a. me) teach you”

You don’t discuss the idea of the virus particles being in droplets of water some of which the mask will capture.

To what extent are virus particles in the atmosphere held in droplets of water?

I suppose the water containing the particles could evaporate leaving individual particles floating around. That supports your conclusion but why didn’t you say it?

With further explanation you might make your case but so far you haven’t.

I’m an anesthetist and I’ve been saying the same all along

Can you explain how a mask that stops none or few of the virions can become a reservoir for the same?

Until you touch the mask the. touch something else. and the garbage goes out the side top and bottom of the mask. And the mask is crumpled up and worn again. Masks are no better and likely worse than covering your cough and washing your hands. If you are sick stay home

I try not to work when I have a respiratory disease. If I do I take over the counter medications to stop coughing and sneezing. I use hand sanitizer on the way in and out of every patient room. If I do cough or sneeze when seeing a patient I stop excuse myself and sanitize my hands again- whether I have a cold or not. I generally only wear a mask around the most fragile patients with compromised immune systems. But that is not what we are talking about here. We are taking about asymptomatic people having to wear masks. I know of no one outside this hysteria who suggests asymptomatic people should wear masks at all times in case they have a cold......

I can guarandamntee that people are not disinfecting their masks after use.

They are most likely not properly handling potentially COVID-19 carrying masks. Used masks are not treated as dangerous waste. Instead they are stuffed in pockets or tossed on the seat of the car where they remain until next use.

Isopropyl alcohol has been impossible to find until recently. Even Everclear has been hard to find! I fortunately have an activated oxygen sterilization method. All require consistent application.

It’s “theatre”, like the TSA — ineffective and a major pain.

I dont know how you are going to supply everyone with N95 masks when we can’t get enough at the hospitals for medical personnel. Then you have to appropriately fit test them and get all them men to shave all facial hair. To be of any use at all they also need to be combined with face shields - when I get all my gear on I’m good for about 10 minutes. Conversations are minimal because most people have a difficult time hearing me. And that’s just talking to a patient in an air conditioned room. Good luck wearing that to a grocery store etc. Then all gear must be appropriately removed and sanitizer or discarded after every use. Anything else is just window dressing. It makes some people feel better but that’s about it

What are aerosols doing in your lungs?
