The First Named Derecho July 31, 1877 - The severe windstorm crossing Iowa that Prof. Gustavus Hinrichs identified as something special, and named the “derecho” for its straight (rather than spiraling) winds.
Derechos have been known for quite a while,
They just aren’t so common so peopl don’t hear much about them.
It’s certainly not something someone just made up recently.

The weather people of today didn’t invent the term. The term has been around for centuries.
You might not want to use the word “stupid” next time because it make you look stupid.
