Not interested in bringing Alexa into your house? That's OK, Amazon's working with your LANDLORD now

Amazon has rolled out a whole-building version of its Alexa AI voice assistant for landlords, billing ‘Alexa for Residential’ as extending smart-home functionality to renters – tenants’ consent apparently not required.

The e-commerce giant announced Alexa for Residential on Thursday, describing it as a feature “that makes having an Alexa-enabled home accessible for anyone, regardless of whether they rent or own their home.” Tenants can link up their own Amazon account, but if they don't have one, no problem – they'll be placed on the building's system.

Landlords, Amazon explains, will have the option to provide “custom voice experiences for their residents,” which could easily translate to charging a higher rent for the ability to submit maintenance requests, reserve amenities like laundry or gym time, pay their rent, and so on using the AI device.

That’s OK, I own my home. I utterly detest being a tenant.

It's funny. When we moved to Texas, it was suggested we should rent or move into a retirement housing area (we're in our early-to-mid 60s) rather than commit to the costs of owning another house.

COVID-19, or at least the political mishandling of it, shows why the latter might not be such a good idea for many retirees. Now, they're going to penalize people for renting. Very glad we purchased a house, although for us that was probably going to be the plan anyway.

The author needs to get with the times...tenants don’t have to pay rent any more. (semi-sarcasm)

Every time I flip on Amazon Prime on my TV to watch something it reminds me that I can just speak my choice to Alexa.

Then it sits and stares at me while I stare at it.

Then I laugh.
The toaster laughs.
I shoot the toaster.

Good times.

Too late, Amazon already knows I support Trump.
I use Alexa to time my cooking timers and to give me weather reports.

The government already knows that you frequent freerepublic.com too.

Woulda been nice if FR’s code included an X/no archive.

Everything we say ends up on Google instantly.

My brother and a buddy at work were talking about going to Lowes after work to pick up certain items. They were not on their phones searching and hadn’t been searching the subject just came up during conversation as they were working, just talking as they worked. When they finished their shift and got ready to walk out they checked their phones and sure enough ads with the items they were talking about were popping up. Big Brother is quite real already.

When we moved to Texas, it was suggested we should rent or move into a retirement housing area (we're in our early-to-mid 60s) rather than commit to the costs of owning another house.

I see that advice given all the time. When we moved to Arizona we immediately bought our house. Renting for a year would have cost us about $18,000, which would have been money down the drain. Not to mention the cost of moving again. And the increase in the price of houses. We did move back to Alaska 16 months later, but kept the house as a winter house. Now we're considering selling it. But we're going to make out quite well, as it has nearly doubled in value since we bought it six years ago. As far as I'm concerned, renting is what you do when you're in between houses.

Hi.

A few years ago my brother had Alexa. It was annoying. So I asked her to solve for pi to the last digit.

Kept her busy for a good while.

I tried it yesterday, and she said 3.14159 and stopped.

Is that progress, or is Skynet becoming self aware?

It became the task of government for fighting terrorism, and Obama loved it as a political weapon.

Another failing of the Bush dynasty.

Google is the government.

Amazon and Google are essentially private owned government tyranny cooperating entities that need to be put down.

This is so very Chinese...and Satanic too.
God has allowed it for reason.

He always gives us choices.
Evil must be sifted.
It’s characteristic of God and His holiness.
Holy Holy Holy means things.

"...tenants’ consent apparently not required."

Consent is given when you choose to live in the property. You are free to move.

No landlord and no Alexa.

They already cross boundaries snooping with their data mining and tracking.

Some people willing lay it all out with mini reality shows on the Fakebook,

“...tenants’ consent apparently not required.”

If consent is not required, how do they get past various eavesdropping laws??
