Most likely if Rittenhouse had shown restraint or hesitated, he would be dead.
But he didn't. He defended himself. And now he'll be ruined.
That's the trade-off. You get to live but you'll have no future. You'll be unemployable, financially bankrupt, and quite possibly incarcerated. Your family will be destitute.
I suppose it's better than being dead. At least your family can visit you in prison.
