The Marine Corp Wants Kamikaze Bombs To Fight China
19FortyFive ^ | 1/11/2021 | Caleb Larson

The U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) is preparing for a war in the Pacific against a near-peer adversary–that means China. One of their go-to weapons in the future could be a new type of long-range loitering munition or what could be described as a sort of kamikaze bomb.

Changing Times

In an effort to become more expeditionary and better prepared for combat in a littoral environment, big changes are coming to the United States Marine Corps. At the heart of the USMC’s pivot from land-based counterinsurgency warfare to their traditional maritime expeditionary role is a need to counter an increasingly aggressive and expansionist China by preparing for a war in the Pacific.

The writer has no idea of the historic meaning of the word “kamikaze”.

Silly and poorly written. America, as MacArthur advised, must never become involved in a large conventional war on the Asian mainland. Such a war will inevitably come when China, which has always coveted the underpopulated and unexploited wealth of Siberia and Russia’s Pacific territories, becomes desperate enough to invade and seize. Let Russia allied perhaps with India and Japan fight that bloody war. America must keep out of it.

I’d prefer Rods From God. Loiter in orbit. Drop when ready.

Or how to spell Corps.

The marines are dumping all their tanks and most of their artillery. This is the kind of “leadership” they have today.

“The marines are dumping all their tanks and most of their artillery.”

The KB is kind of a replacement for the artillery.\\

The weapons system, which the Corps is simply calling Organic Precision Fire, needs to be capable of providing fire support at distances of up to 60 kilometers, or more than 37 miles, according to the RFP document. This range would exceed that of the M777 155mm howitzer, which can fire Excalibur rounds up to 40 kilometers, or around 25 miles.

The system involved with it will be light enough for just one Marine to carry, would launch loitering munitions from a canister or tube no larger than 10 inches across and eight feet long. The projectile would be able to loiter for up to two hours while gathering data and acquiring a target. It would replace the movement of heavier artillery and make the process far more mobile. If they can get it on the road, it will be a plus for our front line defenders. They can pack individual fire power of far greater capacity, easier. Where they go, they don’t need roads.

No way a marine has a need for that kind of range. No way some gold plated Weapon like that will be available in numbers. Artillery going away is insane.

When you need artillery, or a tank, there really is no substitute there is anywhere close to that effective.

“....there really is no substitute there is anywhere close to that effective.”

But at the same time, the artillery have their drawbacks in certain types of terrain and are towed not carried weapons. The marines are not as much sit back and fight as engage.

The KW weapons system can be carried by one person and doesn’t need towing. And it has a greater range than the M777 it’s being compared to. So if terrain is a problem, or they need a few more of these in a sortie, it’s easier to add a few men to transport than trying to navigate vehicles into areas that a man can walk.
