Two of Germany’s defense industry heavyweights, MBDA Deutschland and Rheinmetall have been awarded a federal contract to built and develop a laser weapon demonstrator that will be tested at sea.
The project’s timeline is ambitious, with fabrication, assembly, and installation to be completed by the end of this year, with testing in “near-operational conditions,” and the first for a German Naval Frigate. In keeping with German timidity and reluctance towards all things defense-related, MBDA’s press release stressed the defensive nature of the weapon and laser’s minimal collateral damage potential.

Alas, no sharks with lasers on their heads.
laser’s minimal collateral damage potential.
Only singes the ship’s paint job and blinds and/or cooks the sailors. No problem, they are all enlisted swabbies.
“Near operational conditions “
😂😂😂😂😂
We already have them. This is old news.
Something we already have that’s operational.

This is only because the US has subsidized their defense since the end of WWII. If they bore the full responsibility of their own protection, they’d be just as efficient at military science as they used to be.
First off, we need ships that do not burn up and become in salvageable in dry dock! The clowns who have designed the latest Naval vessels should be tarred and feathered!!!
I think you mean the Chinese have them.
Courtesy of China Joe and his pals.
Laser guided death bullets....
I thought we already had dolphins equipped with “lasers”...
What is the benefit of a laser weapon. It is a line of sight weapon I believe. How does that make it better over a missile with onboard targeting equipment??
Reminds me of that Star Trek episode “The Ultimate Computer” when the M5 connects to a power source with an energy beam, vaporizing a crewman standing between M5 and said source. POOF!
Said Dr. Daystrom, M5’s creator:
“The ensign merely...got in the way.”
bkmk
With a laser, you can destroy an incoming missile.

china will have these soon too im sure ..
No we have them and I know for sure.
We are ahead of this test that was done in May.
If these laser weapons can be fired and moved at high speeds and fired repeatedly withing seconds of firing and take out missiles at hyper sonic speeds they are game changers for surface warfare vessels. A carrier battle group could slug it out for a while if these things can take out the Vampires quickly and at a reasonable distance. They would also free up magazines for offensive missiles instead of SAMS.
