BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - JUST two weeks into the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season and already three disturbances are being monitored in various sections of the Western Hemisphere.
The first one is expected to fully develop off the coast of the United States and Canada in the coming days.
According to the National Hurricane Center, satellite and surface observations indicated that a well-defined low pressure system, located about 90 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, is acquiring more tropical characteristics.
Meteorologists said that environmental conditions appear conducive for further development, and that a tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to form later today (June 14) or tonight.
Then there is a second one that just left the coast of Africa, where there is a strong tropical wave just offshore of West Africa that is said to be producing disorganised showers and thunderstorm activity.
Forecasters however predicted that there would be some development of the system over the next few days before a combination of dry air aloft and strong upper-level winds limit any chance of formation.
I work in the insurance industry. Hurricanes are fascinating to study.
Weatherbell Analytics predicted early storm development in these areas 3 weeks ago. They are real Meteorologists at that site. They evaluate global weather patterns and review them against past patterns of a similar nature and warn their customers weeks and months in advance.
Most so-called Meteorologists simply report on what is currently happening. Hell, you and I can do that.
Lotta high pressure to the west
I still remember Hurricane Belle from 1976.
HURRICANE SEASON: Three areas of disturbances being monitored
I have lived on the north gulf coast for 60 years.
Are you not entertained?
Meh.
Oh no....very fascinating to monitor it.
A premium\industry\pay service?
“A premium\industry\pay service?” Yes. But, novices can sign up for access for $0.75 a day on a month-by-month basis.
They also issue a Saturday Summary which is free. Though sometimes it is issued very late Saturday and occasionally on Sunday.
East coast of peninsula
Surf’s up!!
I'll post as soon as U.S. interests are directly threatened by a named storm.
It’s an attempt to unload lumber at yet higher prices. We live in a Pavlov’s dog news/investment/hype world. Anything to keep the big news off the papers/screens for as long as possible. Time to hype hurricane for profit. More to follow.
Big news (IMHO):
Pelosi Personal guard P/security shot Ashli Babbit
Laptop will be spilled but ignored
Multiple states will decertify election results
COVID-19 killed 150K max - still a bad flu type event
Vaccine will kill more than the above 150K
CDC/NIH are both completely useless
Monetary policy is causing a currency crisis aka dollar collapse
Joe Biteme is an escaped dementia patient
Dr Jill is the de facto president with COS
The election had 13-15 million fake ballots
I can go on ...
Rain is wet.
Never having lived in hurricane country before, I am actually considering moving to tidewater Virginia or North Carolina in the next year or so. Makes family matters a lot simpler if I do but dealing with the weather events may take some getting used to for an old timer.
SOMEONE GET AOC’S ABUELA AND RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!
I predict a hurricane season that could see above average number of hurricanes or possibly below average number of hurricanes. The only solution is to end climate chamge.
You’ll be fine. I have a family member on the Florida Coast. They have a weather radio and the rest is preparation like standard fashlights, etc.
Hell, you and I can do that.“
Looking very likely that temps in the Midwest will be much cooler than current levels by November .
I’m also predicting that oddly the sun will go down sooner .
Wouldn’t have bothered me a lick in earlier life. Safely securing your only home in your later years with physical limitations is a humbling experience.
I hear you. After choosing a property with adequate elevation (flooding), structural wind mitigation (e.g. strong roof), and adequate tree distance from dwelling, ease of window prep is a top concern in hurricane prone areas.
There are lots of options for securing windows. Hurricane screens or shutters are much more manageable for seasoned citizens than the chore of boarding windows. These are pre-installed on tracks, and either motorized or manual crank deployed. Hurricane screens allow for some visibility, while the shutters do not. High impact windows are another option.
Outdoor potted plants are labor intensive to relocate and secure before a hurricane.
