"I Shot Mr. Lee" was one of a number of popular songs featuring violence that came out as the fifties morphed into the sixties. These included El Paso by Marty Robins, Springtime in Alaska by Johnny Horton, The Long Black Veil by Lefty Frizzell, and One of Us (Will Weep Tonight) by Patti Page. This trend prompted Bob Luman to cut a protest song against "the whining and the crying and the shooting and the dying" in popular songs--and it was a hit.

I’ve been an oldies nut for decades and I’ve known it just as long. It is played a lot.

I am also an Oldies nut, as anyone who reads my posts will find out. "Mr. Lee" has been a fixture on the Oldies playlists ever since I was a teenager in the sixties.

Incidentally, I saw the Bobbettes perform live around 2000. I don't know if the group included any of the original members, but they certainly sounded authentic.
