***Jane Halton, a former public servant who conducted a review of the quarantine system last year, said hotel quarantine could last even longer if a new Covid-19 variant evades vaccines.
‘In three or four years’ time I’ll be quite surprised if we’re using these kinds of arrangements unless for example there’s a very nasty new variant,’ she told ABC radio on Tuesday morning.
Ms Halton revealed that quarantine will be required until Australia reaches herd immunity to Covid-19...
For measles herd immunity is achieved when 95 per cent are protected by vaccines or natural immunity while polio requires 80 per cent coverage.
Most experts say herd immunity from Covid will require between 80 and 90 per cent of the population to be protected but some doubt whether it’s possible at all due to new variants, waning vaccine protection and cases of re-infection...
Ms Halton, who is chair of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, also pointed out that thousands of domestic travellers are in home quarantine around the country after travelling to Covid-zero states from Melbourne and Sydney.

Daniel Andrews has turned the police against the public and deprived the public of basic services such as public transport, all in the name of public safety but really to prevent protesters from gathering in the city.
Melbourne is already in lockdown, but today a double lockdown zone applies across up to 360 square kilometres of the city.
Tram, train and bus routes that transverse the CBD have been shut down from 8.00 am this morning. They are not set to begin reoperating until 2.00 pm but, obviously, it will take time for services to return to normal.
Vehicles attempting to enter the lockdown zone are being stopped. Access is only being granted to those travelling for essential work, healthcare or to attend a vaccination appointment. Police on checkpoints — just some of just 2000 sent out to intimidate the people who pay their wages — are stopping vehicles demanding papers and proof of a need to travel.

The Victorian government has threatened to shut down the construction industry altogether following an ‘unacceptable’ protest held by workers across Melbourne.
Further restrictions could be enforced upon those in the sector after the demonstrations stopped traffic around the city’s streets on Friday.
Tradies were protesting against the state’s hefty new Covid-19 mandates for the industry, which will require them to show proof they’ve had their first vaccine shot.
Dozens of workers dressed in hi-vis set up plastic chairs and tables while they took a smoke break along Lonsdale Street on Friday.
The flash protest forced the cancellation of trams on nearby Spencer Street sparking commuter chaos.
Similar demonstrations also occurred in Brunswick, Coburg, Kew, Parkville and Richmond.
In the wake of the rallies, the government has urged tradies to reconsider their behaviour if they want to keep working.
