Amazing how no one outside of the Chinese really understands what happened with this sub deal.
Had Australia bought the French subs they’d have submarines that would be well suited to defending Australia from the bandit Chinese navy.
But with buying nuclear submarines the Australians will be capable of turning a defensive war into an offensive war. Australian nuclear submarines will be able to range at will across the Pacific and into Chinese waters to destroy the pirate PLAN at will.
The power balance in the Pacific shifts back to the good guys with Australia having a first rate submarine fleet.
That's the way I read it, too.
Modern nuclear attack subs will put the RAN back in the game.
And shame on France if they didn't know this was coming.
And that hand full of D-E subs are just a blip on France's defense production - a lot of whine for very little impact.

That is a good analysis, and one that I can assure you is understood at some level in the Navy. It may be lost on the Media and the Administration, but not on the USN...at some level.
I read the Aussies can’t crew their subs now. Crewing 12 Shortfin Barracuda diesel electrics may not be possible. However crewing a smaller number of nukes is possible. A smaller number of higher quality boats may be preferable. If France has a problem it’s with the Aussies not us.
Good summary.
