Federalism, limited government and the Constitution have steadily smothered in the last 100 years by the growth of the progressive-left state, its ever-increasing bureaucrats, its political allies in academia, and its allied crony-capitalists it favors and allows to exist.
IMHO, this is only made possible by massive debt in America’s printed fiat, manipulated, centrally-planned money.
The former is growing arithmetically, because the latter is growing logarithmically.
The only thing which will end the growth of the woke-leftist-crony state will be economic collapse and bankruptcy of Fed.gov. Only then, can federalism and local power have any hope of return. It won’t be a happy time when it occurs, but these are such powerful historical trends, they won’t be reversed otherwise.
America has never been a nation state.
The Roman “nation state” did not end when Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon river with his army to start their civil war. But the Roman REPUBLIC died, and the Roman EMPIRE was born.
Similarly for US, our republic ended when the SCOTUS officially declared that NONE of us have standing in Berg vs. Obama, ushering in the oligarchy. We’ve been watching the death throes of the republic ever since that mortal wound.
Its not the end of the US its the reawakening with a side of harsh.

The American nation state, into which I was born and in which I grew up, ended between 1963 and 1965.
