A once-standout U.S. narcotics agent who used his badge to build a lavish lifestyle of expensive cars, parties on yachts and Tiffany jewels was sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison Thursday for conspiring to launder money with a Colombian cartel.

U.S. District Court Judge Charlene Honeywell in handing down her sentence expressed disgust with the DEA for its failings and said other agents corrupted by “the allure of easy money” also needed to be investigated.

Dominguez has met with prosecutors for “endless hours” to provide information on the criminal activities of “fellow law-enforcement agents who initiated him in a life of crime.”
Government agents who commit crimes should get double the sentence that citizens get because government corruption is worse for free society than mere criminality, and those agents who commit crimes they are charged with enforcing should get triple the sentence, because there is the added corrosiveness of hypocrisy on top of the corruption.
The statute of limitations should also be removed for crimes committed by government agents while acting in their official capacity. (Furthermore, slow-walking an investigation so as to run out the clock (Durham!) should also be criminal.
How about we end this failed war on drugs and dismantle the DEA and all the asset forfeiture laws created as a result?
He won’t last two years in the Big House.
I would also go for that.
Even less time for being a stool pigeon.
Although it took decades for their equivalents to appear on TV, each agent could have substituted for actors on The Sopranos!
MDPD Polygrapher Bob Kelly confided to me that the County's young police recruit applicants couldn't pass use of illegal drugs questions.
As to forfeiture laws, having seen police corruption firsthand, I favor keeping those laws. I expect those police violators will also lose their pensions. Under current Florida law, only judges can keep their crooked earnings.
As a government employee....can he be fired???? sack/on!!!!
sack =sarc
Ya don’t say.
They’ll probably keep him isolated from the GP, but 12yrs is going to be beyond rough.
I am always surprised that these supposedly intelligent people are not smart enough to put their ill-gotten gains in a numbered Swiss bank account.
They could then take early retirement move to a country without extradition to the US and live out the rest of their lives like royalty.
Supplementing their income modestly would go unnoticed but living far above your means is not going to go unnoticed forever.

Don’t mention asset forfeiture here, as we have a FReeper here who thinks it’s the best thing since sliced bread.
“How about we end this failed war on drugs and dismantle the DEA and all the asset forfeiture laws created as a result?”
There are two reasons we can’t.
1. It would make sense.
2. It would reduce the power and size of the Federal government.

The Swiss buckled a while ago and share information with the IRS. They’ll get him if he tries to move the money.
It’s actually pretty difficult to hide large amounts of money, since you can’t* walk into a bank with it, buy a house with it, buy a car with it, pay rent with it, or even buy an international airplane ticket with it these days.
By the time you look at what you can do, I figure I’d have trouble burning through more than 2k or so a month without buying stuff in bulk, or eating out every night.
*technically you can do some/all of those things, but not without likely setting off flags.

That he thought he could live a flashy lifestyle, indicates that he saw the corruption being pervasive and including the higher executives.
Mob movies are full of stupid characters who bring law enforcement down on the whole gang after buying expensive cars and fur coats for their girlfriends after a big heist.
Yes.
The entire man-made climate change movement is based on the same principles as the war on drugs, poverty, terrorism, etc.
It is not designed to change anything except spend more, consolidate more power at the federal level and enact more layers of abusive laws that can be selectively enforced.

What you CAN do is buy a run down house in a good neighborhood with a mortgage, hire illegal aliens with cash to fix it up, then flip it.
Or buy a business that does a lot of cash transactions (bars and restaurants are popular) use cash to supplement the quality of what you sell so as to attract customers, and create a thriving, “legitimate” business.
