"Peppermint production in the United States has declined nearly 25 percent over the past decade
It’s the great Candy Cane Crisis of 2021.
Weakness in peppermint crops and COVID-caused logistical issues have created a problem for Big Candy.
"We only received half of our candy cane order for the holiday season and sold out almost immediately. We currently have zero in stock," Mitchell Cohen, the owner of Economy Candy on the Lower East Side, told The Post. "Raw material and ingredient shortages globally have had quite an impact."
It was a first for the store, which has been in business since 1937. Cohen said they sold more than 12,000 candy canes before running dry.
"Since candy canes were invented, we’ve had candy canes," he said. ..."

Big Candy shenanigans.
Those are 3 words in the English language I never expected to see together in a sentence: “Weak Peppermint Harvest!”
Dentyne Gum meets Farmer Brown.
I don’t believe it.
Peppermint, along with other mints, are highly invasive weeds that you can’t control once they get established in your garden.
PEPPERMINT MOCHA COFFEE......mmmmmmmm.
Plenty of candy canes at the grocery store last night when I bought some. They are natural peppermint, $1.00 a package.
I bought a huge box full of them in bulk.. no issues.
Peppermint Stick ice cream (Brighams) has been out of stock at Market Basket for over a month. All of their other flavors are in good supply.
The only mints I like are Junior Mints, and Wint-o-green Life Savers. I wish they still made clove Life Savers.
My husband was just talking about clove gum and clove seasonings today. I didn’t know they made that flavor in lifesavers.
I grew up in the 50's, and they were available then. According to Wikipedia, Clove Life Savers were first introduced in 1919. Then: "In 1981, Nabisco Brands Inc. acquired Life Savers from the E.R. Squibb Corporation. A number of early mint flavors, including Cl-O-Ve, Vi-O-Let, Lic-O-Rice and Cinn-O-Mon were discontinued due to poor sales."
There are several different Clove hard candies available via Amazon. I might give them a shot one of these days. Butter Rum is another flavor I liked, and they still make them. I'm diabetic, and found that Brach's makes a sugar-free Cinnamon hard candy, which is very good. We used to pay a nickel for a package of Life Savers when I was a kid.
Wow, licorice too. My parents are from Italy and licorice candy was like gold to them. They came in these little silver tins.
Went to Lowes. Got my tree. Went inside to find lights. Took me 5 minutes. Virtually NOTHING LEFT related to Christmas and this was around Dec 9th. Weeks before Christmas. I don’t imagine seeing any clearance items post Christmas.
*sigh* Lord help.
