A man on a boogie board was killed by a shark off the coast of central California on Friday.
The attack happened around 10:40 a.m. at a Morro Bay beach known as “The Pit,” according to KSBY.
The shark bite appeared to be from a Great white shark, first responders told the outlet.
The victim had not been identified, and his age was unknown, the station said.
Swimmers and surfers were banned from going into the water for the next 24 hours, according to the report.
It appeared to be the first reported fatal shark attack of the year in the US, according to data complied by TrackingSharks.com.

Poor kid (probably a young person). Tragic any time, but especially so on Christmas Eve. Prayers up for his family and friends on this sorrowful day.

Dark winter of death — now with Great White Supremacy.
Darn, you guys beat me to it.
Now I have to re-watch Sharknado, thanks a lot
The harbor is full of seals and sea lions. The harbor is just south of the pit. We go upbto Morro Bay all tge time. Just north of the Pit by about a mile is an off leash dog beach. Its entrance is by Torro Road. The water is shallow for a long way out. There’s usually 30 to 50 dogs playing in the water and beach in that area.
2 years ago when we were there a surfer had a chunk taken out of their board by a shark. They closed the beach. They say that the sharks mistake the surfers for seals and sea lions.
The Pacific Ocean is a big place. How do they know the shark is still in Morro Bay?
This Was NOT a Boating Accident!
We’ve gone kayaking at Moss Landing and that harbor is full of seals and sea lions, too. Lots of otters is you head up the slough on the east side of 101.
Stayed there for a few days to take my mother up the road to Hearst Castle. We did go on that beach. There are otters in the water there.

A “first-responder” that is expert in Great White Shark bite patterns — What are the odds? /sarc
Wet suits make them look like seals.
But if a boogie board is some kind of flat flotation device, didn't those used to come with comic fake bites taken out of them? Who's laughing now?
Was he vaccinated? /s
